BEDLAM, THE BRAIN-BLAST
Real Name: Unknown
Group Affiliation: The Derangers
First Appearance: Alpha Flight #52
Last Appearance: Alpha Flight #53
Origin: Alpha Flight #52
Creators: Bill Mantlo & June Brigman
Bedlam was a convicted murderer sitting in a Nova Scotia prison when he
was found by
James MacDonald Hudson.
At the time Hudson was being pressured for
results with his "super-powers" program, so he went looking for prospects using a device that located people with latent mutant powers. James had the prisoner released
and worked on causing his powers to manifest themselves. Needless
to say though, a psychotic with super-powers is still a psychotic... the man
attacked Hudson and Wolverine, and was barely defeated by Hudson.
Years later Bedlam was released from captivity by Cary Cody, Alpha's
then-liaison with the federal government. Cody's reward was to be rendered brain
dead by Bedlam's telepathic powers. In a flury of activity Bedlam then
proceeded to a) gather the super-humans known as the
Derangers, b) create a base of operations in the
Canadian arctic and c) kidnap Alpha Flight.
Bedlam instigated a fight between Alpha and the Derangers. During the
battle he was defeated and killed by
Heather Hudson.
[Compiler's notes: Bedlam was part of Bill Mantlo's campaign to make
James Hudson into an EXTREMELY flawed human being. I simply don't buy it. If
you like,
email me and I'll go into detail as to why.
Like quite a bit of Mantlo's continuity, I prefer to ignore Bedlam.
However, since Laura Dean and
Goblyn went on to play major roles in Alpha
Flight, Bedlam can't be completely cast aside.]
