Meta Schmeta: Cautionary Tales for the Self-Obsessed

In 2008, mutatis mutandis teamed up with Evolution Theatre and Gruppo Rubato to present this quadruplet of one-acts with a meta twist at Arts Court Theatre.

8 WORDS THAT RUINED MY RELATIONSHIP by Patrick Gauthier | directed by Tania Levy | produced by Gruppo Rubato
THE ACTOR'S NIGHTMARE by Christopher Durang | directed by Christopher Bedford | produced by mutatis mutandis
CATASTROPHE by Samuel Beckett | directed by David Whiteley | produced by mutatis mutandis
THIS IS A PLAY by Daniel MacIvor | directed by Christopher Bedford | produced by Evolution Theatre

Meta Schmeta Flyer Gruppo Rubato co-founders Patrick Gauthier and Tania Levy supplied the script and direction for the stylish and succinct 8 Words that Ruined my Relationship. Patrick may have topped even such past acclaimed hits as PygM@ILion, The Man Who Went to Work One Day and Got Eaten By a Bear and The Churchill Project with this carefully crafted repartee between He, She and Someone Else.

Christopher Durang (Beyond Therapy, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All for You, Miss Witherspoon) presents the classic fear of being caught on stage completely unprepared with The Actor's Nightmare. Quick-witted as ever, Durang sends up William Shakespeare, Noel Coward and Samuel Beckett in this indearingly humiliating farce. Artistic Director David Whiteley took to the boards to play the hapless dreamer George Spelvin. Evolution Theatre's Christopher Bedford-hot off his Capital Critics Circle nomination for best director for last Spring's The Ventriloquist-took the reins as director.

Bedford and Whiteley swapped roles for Catastrophe by theatre legend Samuel Beckett (Waiting for Godot, End Game, Happy Days). This metatheatrical mini was dedicated to Vaclav Havel and features a director putting the final touches on a show that conveys the essence of catastrophe. Or is catastrophe the impeding fate of the production?

Daniel MacIvor (Never Swim Alone, Marion Bridge, Cul-de-sac) provided the ideal companion to these with his devastatingly funny This Is A Play, where the actors speak their inner thoughts instead of their lines. MacIvor skewers actors' narcissism, cynicism and neuroticism in this ruthless satire. Evolution Theatre presented this production to sold-out houses at the 2008 Ottawa Fringe Festival, and mutatis mutandis was delighted to include this remount in this perfectly paired set that anchors the quadruple bill.
