Roleplay and Nethack
... Last updated August 2014.
A lot of my online time has involved roleplay. When writing fanfic, it helps to be able to see things from the perspective of the characters involved; similarly, when writing fiction, one wants to create interesting characters. (Occasionally even casting actors or models to portray them.) As far as gender goes, if the prior character I made was male, I'll usually switch to female, and vice versa. Here is a bit of a go-to guide, where I've deconstructed not ALL of the roles I've played or created over the years... but some of the more interesting ones:
Sailor Moon Universe
-
Ryo Urawa (Greg, in the dub) from BSSM (Bishoujo Senshi Sailor MUX, 1997-2002). He had his own webpage that I've recreated here. After working with Kenjiro Cross in Season 1, he became something of a private eye himself in Season 2.
-
Cybelle, Princess of Mercury, a character I took over from her creator in 1998, on Neo-Silver Moon MUX. The character was then reinvented a year or two later (and supplemented with an Earth peasant named Ruri) during a revamp. This lasted until NSM amalgamated with BSSM (above) and CTM (Crystal Tokyo MUX) in 2002 to form Ginzuishou MUX. Cybelle was again reinvented, but not as a senshi princess, merely as a diplomat.
-
Still on Ginzuishou, I applied for the role of Princess Jupiter, aka Lilium, in 2008. (The role of Mercury was filled by Kyna.) That role lasted through 2009, by which point it was becoming difficult to coordinate player characters online. My last Lilium connection was in 2010; my last Cybelle lurking was in 2011.
Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Universe
-
Rupert Giles, on the Buffy MUX, from 2004 until it shut down in 2005. But posted logs may remain accessible on that site.
-
Alison Vunderlande, the BuffyMUX again, same time. She was a pop-culture referencing character who became Angel's secretary on the LA grid, and she even got her own website here, to explain all her randomness in the logfiles.
-
Hayden Whitehall, a Watcher (played by Michael Shanks). He was sent to Ottawa in the guise of a music teacher in the face to face roleplay game HtVS (Hope the Vampire Slayer). This in-person role-play group met from 2003 to 2006 with a brief "reunion tour" in 2008.
-
Crystal Chambers, a fear-projecting empathic runaway (played by Laetitia Casta). She ended up in Albany, in an IRC chat game. Over the years, she became a fear-projecting telepathic empathic half-demon Guardian of Time with sorcery, a special sword, and energy absorbing shield. After joining the game (already in progress) in 2002, it ran until 2008 (!!).
-
Sohma, a demon born in the 1400s, rendered incorporeal and imprisoned in an orb. Ultimately freed by Erikson Investigations in 2003. This spinoff of the Albany game, above, ran from 2003-2005.
-
Rebecca Westbrook, a woman who had Visions (played by Keira Knightly). She was composed of two personalities, one an artist, the other a mage; the former tended to be dominant, while only the latter could cast spells and had awareness of the multiple personality disorder. She lived in the Caribbean in 1802, where there happened to be a Slayer. This online game occurred in 2007, then returned briefly for RP in 2008.
Ottawa Gaming
-
From Buffy, I already mentioned Hayden Whitehall above (2003-2006 and 2008). That was a different gaming group from the roles below (but with some of the same people).
-
From Shadowrun, John Johnson aka "Kit", a human hacker. Originally I just came to the sessions to hang out and write up their synopses, but the group seemed like they needed someone to fill this role. Ran from 2011-2012.
-
From D&D Next, Will Knott, a mage. He fared reasonably well going through a dungeon in 2012. So much so that a "Slave Lords" playtest in 2013 involved the creation of his mage daughter(?), Trixie Knott. Trixie's campaign was written up in first person on my blog, where I sketched her.
-
From Hollow Earth Expedition (HEX), Seth Watson, a pacifist doctor. This campaign (taking place in 1936) started in 2014 and is ongoing.
-
From Star Wars, Maud, a human and also a doctor of sorts. This campaign of 2014 is also ongoing, he's currently on Cholganna.
Other Universes
-
Mason, a Time Lord (played by Morgan Freeman). Went by the nickname "Chief" in his youth, tended to keep his TARDIS in the form of a car. Involved in an online game in 2006, returned briefly for RP in 2008.
-
Nanoha Takamachi, a Techno-Mage (played by Alicia Witt). A total anime rip-off, down to generating sheets for spells in MGLN, but played in a more "Buffy"-style universe. Also played a second character in tandem, a mercenary named Pegasus (played by Jason Momoa), so it was interesting at one point when both characters were in the same room... online game in 2008.
-
Alison van der Land (played by Katja Herbers), a character from a play-by-email campaign ("Powers") who initially gained Teleport abilities. Her real name was Alijda van Vliet, and she fled to Seattle under that assumed name after stealing money from a company with less than legit business practices. The game ran from 2011 through 2012.
-
Cognac, a Xindi Primate, the archaeologist liaison on a starship, within the new universe created by the Star Trek (XI) movie. They went searching for Vulcans in the "Lost Colony" game. It ran online from 2009 to 2012.
-
Beam, a holographic projection who appears female (and considers herself to be such). She can control whether she is solid or not, but does not know her origins, and continues to wander the Shangrilah universe. This particularly interesting character was created in 2009 after less interesting character attempts on this particular MUX, but I stopped playing her in late 2011.
-
Katherine "Kat" Conway (played by Colin Ferguson), a male sergeant who became involved in the "Doorways" project, out of Area 51. (Sort of like Stargate, but not really.) He had pyrokinesis, and pined for a girl named "Fate" who had introduced him to his gift, and the occult. This online game ran from 2011 through to 2013.
-
I also play on a Transformation MUX, where my character's body will reset to a "default" condition after a prolonged rest. Again, she is not sure of her origins or how she gained this ability; it's great for not gaining weight, less useful if she actually wants to change her appearance.
Nethack
-
Okay, so Nethack isn't technically roleplay, but it is gaming. I spent time in 2007-08 trying to defeat the game, ultimately succeeding in ascending seven character classes, and then writing about their exploits in the dungeons. The most notable among them being Mage Hayate. So she gets top billing on my Nethack Ascension Page.
