The ruins of Maaken are the ancient remains of a city. They now sit on the edge of the Maakengorge. In a temple deep in the ruins, Barraka planned to sacrifice Madelon, daughter of baron Oren Vanalund, in order to resurrect the Darklord Vashna. Vashna was slain by King Ulnar I at the battle of Maakengorge during the age of the Black Moon. Had Barraka successfully released the spirits of the Darklord and his army from the Maakengorge, northern Magnamund would have been doomed. However Lone Wolf, last of the Kai Lords of Sommerlund, killed Barraka and released Madelon before the sacrifice could take place.
