Piz Lech Dlace

September 26, 2019

We packed up our San Vito apartment into the car and drove through Covara and then up many switchbacks to Campalongo Cinnlonch pass. We spent the next few hours hiking up a steep service road, passing several chairlifts where people with motorized mountain bikes were hitching rides up the mountain. The last few hundred meters of vertical was a nice hiking trail across alpine meadows where we stopped for lunch at one of the many lookouts along here. A short hike further brought us to the hut which was fairly busy with the lift access lunch crowd, but we managed to find a table on the porch and order a coffee. The hut custodian offered us a private room for an extra five euro a night which we thought would be worth it, however the room was not yet ready. We dumped some gear and decided to climb a grade one via ferrata and hike up to a higher elevation to get some acclimatization in.

Into the sub-alpine.

Our home for the next three nights.

We hiked up a scree slope and arrived at the first wire. Helmuts on due to rockfall hazard and I harnessed up, while Kat did not bother. The ferrata was a simple scramble with a few exposed traversing paths, where I clipped in occasionally for some of the crux manouvers, however this really was not required. The ferrata ended pretty quickly and we hiked up some easier trail in the alpine zone. At 2800 meters we began to encounter snow, however it was fairly thin and easily walked on. We pushed on to the summit of Piz Lech Dlace, where the final hundred meters had some interesting scrambling and occasional wire for a hand belay. In a couple of spots the footing was tricky due to the snow, but overall a fairly straight forward climb. Piz Boe, the highest mountain in this area loomed another 150 meters above us with quite a bit more snow and we if the weather cooperates, we plan to climb this tomorrow.

Our route goes up the scree gully in the photo center.

A bit of snow in the alpine.

The view.

We descended the same route, stopping for a brief side trip to ascend a small high point at 2781 meters which looked down a shear cliff face towards the hut. A short scree walk and simple down climbing on the via ferrata had us back with time for relaxing before supper.

Looking down at the hut from peak 2781.

Total time: 6.5 hours
