Piz da Lech - Round 2

September 29, 2019

Today was our last morning in the hut and our main goal was to hike back down to the car. Since the weather was so nice we decided to do a quick run up the via ferrata on Piz da Lech again before heading down, hoping to get in some clearer views today. The climb was easier the second time around as we knew all the key moves. It also fogged in as we approached the summit, so the views were pretty much the same as yesterday. We took a quick break at the top and then head down the scree and back to the hut.

Beautiful sunrise.

Climb on.

Summit again.

Summit time: 2.25 hours
Total time: 3.5 hours

After a beer on the porch enjoying great views from here (it had cleared again), we packed our bags and started downward. We chose a different and slightly longer route for the descent. A lovely traversing path took us past excellent vistas as we hiked along, though much to Kat's chagrin, this path also climbed about 50 meters at one point. At a ridge full of limestone pinnacles, the trail turned downward steeply as it wound through these spectacular towers. At the base of this was Kaiser Hut, where we stopped for lunch on some benches looking over the valley.

The walk down.

Between the spires.

From here we descended straight down the lift line which dropped us the last 250 meters quickly on a steep but nice grassy slope which was pleasant to walk on. Encountered one nervous dog here, which got Kat screaming in German, an elderly woman apologizing in Itallian, and me trying to smooth things over in English. Finally the woman got the dog leashed and then disappeared. We reached the car a couple hours after leaving the hut and then drove the long descent into the valley at the base of Marmolada, where we will be staying for the next three nights.

Descent down the ski hill.
