Nicole and Donna got together with Felicia for dinner. Michael came out of the elevator.
Chad pulled himself together and came back in. He promised Dawn she'd be all right and rushed Jamie and Scott out. Chad said they couldn't tell Dawn before Christmas.
Mac's eyes filled with tears and he said this kind of thing was supposed to happen to Other People's Children.
Sam asked Amanda what was wrong. She said she was pregnant. He backed away. He pointed out that it was impossible, since she had been on the Pill. She admitted she'd messed them up, although she doesn't seem to understand what exactly she did. And the last time they didn't use a condom or something. He was stunned. She decided he suspected her of trying to get him to support another man's baby and ran out. He pursued her.
Mac wanted to find Amanda. He was upset. For one thing, Sam and Amanda smacks too much of Mitch and Rachel, which entanglement and pregnancy ruined his life. For another, Amanda is the only child he and Rachel have together, and that makes her special. Rachel accused him of trying to turn this into a vendetta against Mitch.
Donna gazed at Michael. Michael asked Wally if he'd seen a brilliant financial analyst. [Actually, since that wouldn't show, he asked about a beautiful blonde.] He hadn't. It is, most definitely, a business dinner. He approached Donna's table to be civilly concerned for her health. She tried too hard. He would not let Felicia and Nicole leave them alone and retreated to the bar. Donna was put out. Felicia and Nicole advised her to give him time. Donna said she blamed Clara, a little, for wanting John found. She went to give Michael hell but he'd gone. She refused to give up. Felicia and Nicole advised her not to be shoving the baby down Michael's throat all the time. Donna said she didn't have time to waste and went to phone Jamie. She saw the brilliant financial analyst looking for Michael and saw only her blonde beauty, and the way in which she laughed, having read the note he'd left for her.
Amanda stubbed her toe in maternity park. Sam caught up to her. She told him she didn't need him for anything.
Chad figures on keeping this from Dawn until they find a cure. Scott and Jamie tried to talk sense to him. Scott said he would tell her. Chad insisted on being there. They went into the room. Dawn was relieved to hear she didn't have cancer. Jamie explained she had Pneumocystis carinii, part of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. She looked young, and stunned, and incredulous. She insisted she couldn't have because she was a virgin and she'd never done drugs. Scott calmed her down. Jamie told her it had probably been the blood transfusion. She said bitterly her mother had been a prostitute so it was possible. She wept.
Donna decided she had things to do and fled.
Mac left a message on Julie Ann's machine. He told Rachel this could be worse and they would get through this. He said they didn't need Sam. Rachel pointed out that Amanda would be shattered if this didn't work out.
Sam was extremely decent. He apologized for reacting a little badly. He accepted his share of the blame and felt bad that she'd kept it from him for a week. She asked how he felt about her. He said he felt he didn't know her. He said he'd been through this before with an 18-year-old [false alarm]. She admitted she'd lied about her age.
Mac worried about Amanda. He listed Sam's flaws. Rachel said Amanda must see things in him they didn't. He went out to find her, instructing Rachel to stay home in case.
Jamie assured Dawn it was safe for her to hug. Chad left. Dawn was upset because she and Scott had almost made love. She wanted to know how long she had so she could do stuff. Scott said he'd take care of her. Jamie mentioned that AIDS was "no respecter of age or sex or sexual preference" and that women tended to die sooner. They left her alone. She sobbed that it wasn't fair.
Chad blamed himself.
Michael ordered dinner for himself and the financial analyst in his suite.
Chad went in and comforted Dawn.
Scott asked Jamie to test him for AIDS so Dawn would be sure he hadn't caught it from her. Donna came and told Jamie she wanted Michael to go through this pregnancy with her. He told her the procedure she wanted done to prove paternity involved higher risk than amniocentesis. She decided against it.
Sam took Amanda back to the loft. He said they had to decide what was best for them and her. She apologized for lying. He said that was in the past.
Donna came up to Michael's suite. The financial analyst answered the door.
Dawn talked about Ali McGraw in Love Story and burst into tears and said she didn't want to die. He fetched Scott for her. Scott embraced her tightly.
Sam told Amanda he cared about her. She wanted to leave. He tried to stop her. Mac arrived and they each grabbed an arm.
