Basin Lake

It was warm last night and we were stripped down to t-shirts shortly after leaving camp. We climbed up the gully on a field of boulders and the occasional snow patch relief. As we neared the top, the terrain became a wide open gravel field which made for easy walking. Here we spread out at our own paces and soon found ourselves at the top of a large cliff overlooking Base Camp valley, with Iberville in the distance looking much less intimidating from this angle. After a short break we continued up to summit peak 3840, where we casually looked for a survey marker, but came up empty handed. We then descended the ridge line overlooking Basin Lake until the slope became shallow enough for a direct descent downwards. We located a flat gravelly spot for our campsite and quickly set up. A short day of hiking at only three and a half hours allowed us to have a leisurely lunch followed for by a very brief swim in the icy lake to clean off the last few days of grime. Paul went in fully clothed to get some laundry done simultaneously. It rained in the afternoon... hard. We holed up in our tents and mine was leaking a bit thanks to the fight it put up at Lake of the Wind. Not too bad though, and other than the occasional drip in my face I remained fairly dry inside. Paul and Deb set up a tarp with all five of our hiking poles over the kitchen rock, which allowed us to eat supper out of the weather. The mosquitos liked this shelter too though, so we retired to bed immediately after eating. Fortunately the weather looks to be clearing for tomorrow.
