May 19, 2024 - Hearst Lake
A quiet morning was spent down by the lake, sipping coffee as we watched the sun rise. It was a hot day again.
Black fly season seems to be over and the mosquitos are now in full force. Fortunately the wind and dry conditions
got rid of most of these pests as we followed up the crevasse trail.
The crevasse was a giant crack in the earth, several
meters wide, some 20-30 meters deep, and about three kilometers
long. There was even snow packed into the bottom of it. We stopped many times to marvel at this geological marvel.

Hiking along the crevasse
We both were fairly tired today so took many breaks, utilizing the campsites as they were comfortable places to sit and
the hill tops as the breeze up there kept the bugs away. There were lots and lots of climbs and descents along the way,
one of the most interesting being the descent to Rib Lake following the base of the "Tripe Wall", which was another
neat rock formation.

One of the numerous lookouts
The final three kilometers to Hearst Lake were painful. The beating sunshine, heat, flies, and general tiredness of
four days in a row of hard going was starting to get to us. Three steep climbs were slowly ascended with breaks
on top of each. We persevered however, and finally arrived at Hearst, which comes complete
with a three tier waterfall. I could not resist the
temptation for a cool shower followed by afternoon coffee and a nap.
