August 14, 2006 - Little Red Lake to Peskowesk Brook

We got up early because we knew we had a long hike ahead of us this morning. I got up a little earlier than Emily and read my book for an hour while making and drinking coffee. Emily got up and we ate a breakfast of oatmeal, muesli, and sausages. Got packed up and hit the trail by 09:00. We first bush whacked our way out the overgrown access trail for 500m and then travelled the main trail which was easy going as it was an old cart track. After a few km, we crossed a stream where we were able to refill our water bottles. The trail then became a gravel road. In fact, the remainder of the day was spent hiking along this gravel road. Fortunately the road was unused, but it was a pretty boring hike from this point on, not to mention hard on the soles of the feet. Nevertheless, we walked on. After a while we came across a campsite where we had a large snack. This site had a small cabin with bunk beds and a wood stove. Looks like a nice place for a ski trip in the winter. There was a log book so we perused the entries dating back for a couple of years and then added our own to the end. We hiked on. After a while we stopped for lunch on a rotten log. We trudged on down the road. I started to get frustrated because this was pretty crappy for hiking on. Tomorrow will simply continue on this road until we reach the car, which is parked on the same road. We did see a dead snake, and a dead cicada along the trail (road). At least the going was fast, and we completed the 20 km hike by 15:45. We set up camp and then discovered that our cooking oil bottle had somehow come open. Everything in the food bag was soaked in oil. We cleaned it up by soaking it up with toilet paper, which then made great tinder to start a fire which we used to burn as much of the oil soaked food packages and stuff. Since we had a fire going, we threw some pots of water on to boil, and after a while cooked up an Indian buffet supper. The remainder of the evening was spent around the fire finishing up the remainder of the wine and whiskey.
