August 10, 2015

It rained briefly last night, but all was dried out in the sunshine of the morning. A cool breeze was doming down the river valley to a sheltered spot in the washout where someone had built a moss shelter and fire pit. After a relaxing breakfast we packed up camp for the last time and started hiking out along a pretty solid vehicle track. Travel was fast, and in one hour we were at the Alaska Highway. We sat down on a pile of gravel to wait for our ride which was not scheduled for another few hours. Up North arrived a bit later after that, as they had had a minor accident while leaving Whitehorse which meant that the truck had to be exchanged. Nevertheless, we were glad to see them, and drove off to Haines Junction for a bakery stop and then back to the city. We celebrated with beers and perhaps too much food, as we all had trouble walking back to the Red Door with full bellies groaning.

Handy roadway to walk along.

Celebration at reaching the Alaska Highway.

Our bus stop for the next four hours.

Leftover food; 1 dehydrated meal, 10 oz of granola (two varieties), one cliff bar, 1 mL of hot sauce, two tortillas (not shown).
