Catskills Hiking Camp

Ever since the success of the Maine hiking camp back in 2014, I had been toying with the idea
of running a sequel hiking camp in the east. The Catskills seemed like a good destination due to the quantity of hiking routes as well as the
distance from home; close enough to drive to,
but too far to go for a weekend trip. Lynne was chatting with me one day and mentioned she really wanted to do something similiar to the Maine
camp as well, and would be willing to do the logistical organizing, so the idea began to take real shape. The camp was a great success. Thirteen
people hiking over the course of six days allowed us to knock off 17 of the Catskill 35ers, for a total of 90 person summits.
One thing we learned about this area is that the hikes are not really about the summits. Though the summit is the goal, what makes the hike is the
journey. Fun scrambling, nice lookouts, endless interesting rock formations, and waterfalls are what these mountains are about. We were fortunate
enough to have the fall colours for a bonus.
- Day 1 - One group bushwhacking Graham, Doubletop, and Big Indian, and a second hiking Balsam Lake Peak and Graham.
- Day 2 - Rain day... pub hike and Woodstock tourism.
- Day 3 - Dual traverse of Table and Peekamoose.
- Day 4 - One group traversing Slide, and a second hiking in the Blackhead range.
- Day 5 - One group climbing Hunter, and a second hiking a loop of the central Devil's Path peaks.
- Day 6 - Loop hike of the eastern Devil's Path peaks.
