Ottawa to Fredericton - Day 3

Sunday, September 9 - Bromont, QC - 128 km

At 23:00 last night I got rudely awoken to the terrible sounds of amplified screaching of country music. It sounded far away, but very loud. I was forced to put up with this for an hour until it finally stopped, at which point I went back to sleep. At 04:00 I was awoken by about 30 dogs barking, from the same direction, and possibly distance. They did not stop so I got up and began preparing breakfast in the dark. The dogs kept barking through this time. I packed up camp and got on the road about 06:30, just as it was getting light enough to ride. At this point I guess the dogs got fed because they finally shut up. About 2 km down the road I passed a country music fair. That explains the wailing last night. Today was a beautiful ride. I wound down roads through apple orchards and vineyards. I passed many apple stands beside the road but it was too early. I was getting hungry, so was considering just stealing an apple from one of the trees beside the road. I was saved from performing this sinful act by coming across a self-serve apple cart, so I stopped, took 4 apples and threw some change into the pot. The apples were delicious. I was still hungry so biked to the next town and found a restaurant, but it was closed. Ate another apple and granola bar instead. Biked on to the next town and found an open restaurant and ordered my second breakfast for the day. Also had a couple cups of coffee, so was feeling a little wired. Rode on through more farmland and around a big lake with beaches that looked like the ocean. Unfortunately, it was all private property, preventing the commoner from enjoying the beach. In the background, the Appalation mountains towered. I stopped in a small town by an old mill and ate lunch by the dam. As I was eating, it began to rain. I put on my jacket and rode on. As I approached Bromont, the traffic began to get heavy, but fortunately, the road had a decent shoulder. As I passed various wineries, I decided to stop at one to get out of the rain. Tried a few wines and decided to buy a bottle to bring to Gord's. Turned up the road to Bromont and the traffic got pretty bad. The road also turned to a potholed mess, and it also got very hilly. Finally I reached a dirt side road that took me towards Glen Hart farm. After an extremely steep and long climb, I reached the farm and pulled in. Had a shower, some beer, and lots of muffins. Ate a huge meal of fresh vegetables and then Gord and I went down to the brew pub for a couple pints. The IPA was fabulously bitter.

Self serve apples!

The longest trucks I have ever seen.

Crossing the Richelieu river.

I came across some people racing remote control cars. They were so fast it was difficult to get a good picture.

Riding the beat up road into Bromont in the rain.

Glen Hart Farm.
