Friday, September 21 - Fredericton, NB - 57 km
Slept in a bit and then got packing as the potato and sausage breakfast cooked. It was fairly cold, but the sun quickly
began to warm things as it rose. The ride started out with a 2 km climb. This explains the noise of the trucks last
night. My knee did not like this one bit. The rest of the day was rolling hills and not too bad. Whenever the pain
stopped, I was really enjoying the ride. Traffic again was pretty much non existent. I turned down some even lesser
highways, and it truly became non-existent. The shortest route took me onto a very rough dirt road. Fortunately, it
became paved after about 6 or 7 km. I passed three pedestrians along this stretch, and about an equal number of cars.
The pedestrians said hi, the cars did not. I crossed the Saint John river over a large hydro-electric dam, and the
road signs got confusing. I wanted to take the the 102 east, but my choices were south and north. I ended up just
taking a side road that went in the right direction. This eventually connected to the 102 south, which took me in
a north-east direction into Fredericton. I stopped in a park and had some lunch. Then I road downtown to the tourist
information building. There was no one there, but I got a crappy map of the city showning locations of all the hotels.
Unfortunately, the map lacked two import things; one, a scale, and two, street names. I decided to head for a motel
that looked close to downtown. After riding a couple of kilometers, I had calibrated the map's scale, and decided that
I did not want to stay so far out of town. I rode back downtown, counted street lights, and somehow managed to find a
bed and breakfast. There was a room available so I decided to stay. The owners were very friendly and helped me get
settled. I used their computer to book a rental car for the rest of my journey. I spent the rest of the day wandering
around downtown and sampling the local brewery's (Picaroon) beers in a couple of different pubs.
Yet another hydro dam over the Saint John.
The end of the bike journey.
Walking around Fredericton.
The parliment buildings here look pretty much the same that they do in Ottawa... all wrapped up.
I just love this sign.
