August 30, 2020 - Smoothwater Lake

After the drive up to the Temagami area yesterday, Debbie, Bill, Katharina, and I spent a comfy night at Smoothwater Lodge. After breakfast we loaded up an additional rental canoe and spent the next couple of hours driving around the Temagami wilderness to the Montreal River access. The 23 km drive down Beauty Lake road went fairly well, as this "unmaintained" road seemed to be pretty well looked after. Kat's hatchback handled this fine and there was no need for Deb's 4wd truck and tow rope.

Just before noon we had the canoes loaded and cast off on our adventure to climb the highest peaks of Ontario. A few hours of paddling brought us to Smoothwater Lake and we went about looking for a suitable campsite. We checked out one rocky point which looked lovely, but it lacked sufficient places for tents, so we moved on a little further and found a nice spot on another rocky point which suited well for camp 1.

Starting out.

Lunch rock on the Montreal River.

Arriving at camp.

Watching the sun set...

...and the moon rise.
