Descendants of Henry Hollingsworth

Eighth Generation

(Continued)

611. Daniel Hollingsworth (Samuel , John , Daniel , Samuel , Thomas , Thomas , Henry ) was born in 1840 in Escott Twp, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada.

Daniel was a farmer and practiced the Church of England religion, while his wife and daughter were Methodist, no doubt a carry over from Cora's family.

A family story written to Harry Hollingsworth by a Mrs. Gray goes this way. I have a story that my grandfather, John and his brother Danile came over from Traverse City, Michigan, by horse to Plum Hollow, to buy more horses, and stopped off at the "Witch of Plum Hollow", a fortune teller, and had their cups read. She told them of a death in their family which concerned the both of them. They returned home to Michigan where they learned that their father, Samuel had taken ill with a hernia attack. His own good doctor couldn't be located, and so he died within three or four days.

Daniel married Cora House daughter of John House and Elizabeth (unknown maiden) about 1877. Cora was born in 1850 in Mallorytown, Leeds Co, Ontario, Canada.

Cora was of English decent and was a Methodist. Her daughter Addie obviously went to church with her mother and was also a Methodist as reported on the 1881 census.

Daniel and Cora had the following children:

  886 F i Addie Hollingsworth was born on 11 Mar 1878.

Addie's parent put on the 1881 that she was Irish decent, probably told to the census taker by her father, because her mother was of English decent, which made Addie a combination of English/Irish.
887 M ii George Hollingsworth was born in Escott Township, Leeds, Ontario, Canada.

Not much is known about George other than he lived at one time in Colborne, Ontario.

612. William (John) Hollingsworth [scrapbook] (Samuel , John , Daniel , Samuel , Thomas , Thomas , Henry ) was born on 9 Aug 1841 in Known as " Western John". He died on 9 Mar 1915 in Escott, Ontario.

William was known as "Western Jack" and "Gentleman John".

William married (1) Harriet Martha Davis [scrapbook] daughter of Edward Davis and Elizabeth Francis on 5 May 1868 in North Augusta, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada.

They had the following children:

888 F i Alice Hollingsworth was born on 27 Jun 1870 in Leeds, Ontario, Canada. She died in 1946 in Leeds, Ontario, Canada.

Ellenor "Ellen" Hollingsworth Neil in her Will left all the money left after giving what she had bequeathed to the various family members. Thes ladies were named in the Will as Alace, Hatta and Netta. Not known at this time how much money that would have been.
        Alice married Lewis Trickey.
889 M ii Edward Joseph Hollingsworth was born on 10 Aug 1873 in Leeds, Ontario, Canada. He died in 1912 in Mallorytown, Leeds Co, Ontario, Canada.

Ellenor "Ellen" Hollingsworth Neil left to her nephew Edward a town lot, 1 acre #22 in the snd concession of Escott, when he attains age 21.
        Edward married Ella Huchinson.
890 F iii Harriet (Hatta) Alicia Frances Hollingsworth was born on 1 Oct 1874 in Escott Twp, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada. She died on 13 Feb 1960 in Leeds, Ontario, Canada.
Harriet married Richard Gainford Green on 18 Apr 1906 in Escott Twp, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada.
891 F iv Netta (Nettie) Hollingsworth was born on 31 Oct 1877.

William married (2) Lucy Alberta Hodge daughter of John Hodge and Mary Ann Leeder in 1881. Lucy was born on 10 Apr 1850 in Mallorytown, Leeds Co, Ontario, Canada. She died on 10 Sep 1930 in Escott Twp, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada.

On the 1881 Lucy Alberta Hodge listed her nationality as English, and all of her children are listed as English. Father William John Hollingsworth was Irish, curious why the children were listed as English. They were all members of the Church of England, like the Church of Ireland, a protestant religion.

William and Lucy had the following children:

892 F v Lucy Alberta Hollingsworth was born on 30 Dec 1881 in Escott Twp, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada. She died on 18 Nov 1957.
Lucy married Frederick William Greer on 4 Sep 1901 in Escott Twp, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada.

James married Pearl May Edgley on 30 Dec 1919 in Leeds, Ontario, Canada.
894 F vii Beatrice Hollingsworth was born on 13 Jul 1886 in Escott Twp, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada. She died on 2 Aug 1963.
Beatrice married (1) Samuel Benjamin Plunkett on 21 Oct 1912 in Escott Twp, Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada.

        Lila married S.E. Burnham.

613. Catherine Hollingsworth (Samuel , John , Daniel , Samuel , Thomas , Thomas , Henry ) was born on 2 May 1842 in Leeds, Ontario, Canada. She died about 1878 in Fife Lake, Grand Traverse, Michigan.

Catherine Hollingsworth /Cain Samuel's daughter with first wife Ellen died about 1878 in Fife Lake MI which is just south of Traverse City in Grand Traverse County, Fife Lake Township.
Catherine Hollingsworth and John Cain came to Grand Traverse about 1869/70. Catherine would still have lived in Canada when her father Samuel died in Traverse City.
John Cain married Catherine Hollingsworth (1842) daughter of Samuel (1803) and Ellenor (1809), (Hempenstall) Hollingsworth of Leeds Co., Yonge Twp., formerly of Co. Wicklow and Co. Wexford respectively.

John and Catherine were married on May 02, 1861 in Leeds Co., Canada West. They had a son born to them his name was Fred (Frederick) John Cain about 1864 in Canada West. He would be the only son from this marriage as he had four sisters who followed. Shortly after Fred was born it appears that they moved to Wisconsin for a while probably to join Amos and Charles Cain, John's brothers who had moved there in the mid 1800's.

Sometime between 1878 and 1880 census Catherine Hollingsworth Cain must have died. It may have been a result of Fanny's birth. Fanny shows up as a two years old and no mother in the 1880 census.I have found no varification of her death in Grand Traverse though. Sometimes I wonder if she ran off or something like her father. When her daughters married they put their father's name on the marriage licence and under mother they put unknown. Perhaps their stepmother did not appreciate them knowing about their mother. I hope to find out more someday. (Catherine Murdoch)

My grandmother's name was Catherine Andrews and her grandmother was Catherine Hollingsworth and Her grandmother was Catherine Hempenstall. I was named after my grandmother so the name is skipping every second generation. (Catherine Murdoch)

614. Samuel Hollingsworth (Samuel , John , Daniel , Samuel , Thomas , Thomas , Henry ) was born on 31 Jul 1844 in Escott, Ontario. He died on 12 Oct 1879 in Mallorytown, Leeds Co, Ontario, Canada. He was buried in Mallorytown Cemetery.

Samuels gravestone says "Samuel Hollingsworth died Oct 12, 1879 aged 35 years 2 mo., 12 days" I have also have Samuel's birth date as July 31, 1844 * **Would have died just before 1881 Census

The other Samuel is still one of Samuel and Ellenor's sons it is not a question to me that he is their son. He is the Samuel buried beside his mother Ellenor. in Mallorytown. In my data base I have him married to Margaret Colwell. In your data base he is unmarried. (This has been changed, Editor I am not sure which is right.)

Also Daniel is a son of Samuel and Ellenor it is really just his birth date that is unknown like you say he probably is the second son. John as the first son would be named after his grandfather John. (Catherine Murdoch)

Harry Hollingsworth's research has Samuel marrying Emily Jane Dowsley, granddaughter of Joseph Lamphire Dowsley. Not sure if Catherine Murdoch's information is more accurate at this time, but I go with Catherine's.

Samuel married Margaret (Maggie) Colwell daughter of Henry Colwell and Sarah (unk Maiden) Colwell on 6 Jul 1874 in Charleston. Margaret was born in 1856 in Yonge, Escott Rear, Leeds South, Ontario.

618. Thomas Hollingsworth (Samuel , John , Daniel , Samuel , Thomas , Thomas , Henry ) was born in 1859. He died in 1900 in Liiving at 3751 Wallace St., Chicago, Ill..

He wrote his half-brother John in 1904 asking about an estate which was being processed in Ireland, and wondered if they were related to an Annie Gainford, Charlotte James, or Lizzie Gorman. The first two are children of John Hollingsworth, Cranacrower. Apparently a notice appeared in a Chicago paper in 1904.
