commissioned by the Governor for that purpose resided on his paternal
estate.
Zebulon at age of 43, in 1740 Testified in the Boundary Dispute case
that his "father sometimes followed the business of blacksmith,
sometimes building houses and at other times surveying lands in both
Provinces of Maryland and Pennsylvania."
Converted from Quaker to Episcopalian.
Several sources, the vestry minutes of St. Mary Anne's, land
records, and his personal will, indicate that Zebulon Hollingsworth,
Sr. was a Captain, presumably of the local militia. The Colonial Wars
took place during his lifetime, however, no records exist confirming or
denying his participation.

1750 About this time Zebulon Hollingsworth construct a two story brick
Federal-style house approximately 30-feet square at Elk Landing.
1848 The original brick two story house constructed by Zebulon

stucco. This the essentially the house you see today.

The milling industry was an important economic facet for the time: the
Hollingsworths owned mills at least as early as 1721, around the time
the first Henry Hollingsworth migrated to Cecil County. In an indenture
dated June 16th of that year, Henry and Lydia Hollingsworth conveyed
onto their son Stephen Hollingsworth half of their mill located on the
west branch of the Elk River, referred to as the Hollingsworth Mill.
The Stephen Hollingsworth mentioned must have been brother to Zebulon
Hollingsworth, Sr.; in fact, Zebulon Hollingsworth signed the indenture
as a witness. |

1731/1732.
"With great respect and esteem, have the honor to be, Sir, your
most
obedient servant, Alexander Hamilton.
"His Excellency Thomas Sim Lee, Governor of Maryland."
Before the departure of the troops from Baltimore to suppress the
"Whiskey
Insurrection," the yellow fever made its appearance in the town,
and
Messrs. Gustavus Scott, George Salmon, Jos. Townsend, Alexander McKim,
Jesse Hollingsworth, Thomas Johnson, and Thomas Dixson were appointed a
Committee of Health. There were 344 deaths by the fever and other
diseases
during the months of August and September. The malady did not cease
until the 15th of
October. Capt. James Allen, who had conducted his company of riflemen
as
far as Frederick to protect the State Arsenal from the insurgents,
returned an invalid, and with other meritorious citizens fell a victim
to
the fatal disease. The Commissioners of Health selected a site for the
hospital from Capt. Yellot, which was improved and continued to be used
as
a hospital for strangers and seafaring men until 1808, when it was
leased
on certain conditions to Doctors Smyth and Mackenzie. It was at this
period, and particularly on accouut of the fever, that many citizens
fled
from the town with their families, where it appears the fever did not
reach them, and some of them erected country residences which now
ornament
the vicinity.
An Act was passed on the 20th of January, by the General Assembly,
incorporating the Reisterstown Turnpike Company, and authorizing Samuel
Smith, Joseph Thornburgh, Jesse Hollingsworth, and Philip Grable, to
receive subscriptions to the stock in Baltimore City. |

Gunpowder Copper Works gained a national reputation. This gristmill,
which still stands near Harford Road and the Great Gunpowder Falls, was
operated by Levi Hollingsworth from 1811 to 1838. During the War of
1812, Gunpowder Copper Works supplied the United States Navy with
copper sheathing for ships. Following the war, the plant refined copper
from Frederick County mines for the dome of the US Capitol, which had
been destroyed by the British. Hollingsworth's dome lasted until the
expansion of the Capitol in the 1860's.

Levi married Hannah Paschall on 9 Mar
1768. Hannah was born in Levi and Hannah had three children.
Marriages were ordered promulgated by affixing the intentions of the
parties on the court-house and meeting-house doors, and when the act
was solemnized, they were required by law to have at least twelve
subscribing witnesses. The wedding entertainments must have been more
of a nuisance than a pleasure, either for the parents or the young
couple. They were inspired by a conception of unbounded hospitality,
very common at that time. Even the Quakers accepted them with good
grace until the evil consequences of free drinking on those occasions
compelled them to counsel more moderation. There was feasting during
the whole day, and for the two following days punch was dealt out ad
libitum to all comers. The gentlemen invited to partake of these
libations were received by the groom on the first floor; then they
ascended to the second floor, where they found the bride surrounded by
her bridesmaids, and every one of the said gentlemen, be they one
hundred, kissed the bride. There was a quaint custom in those days of
turning off marriage notices with some remark complimentary to the
bride, as follows: "Mr. Levi Hollingsworth to Miss Hannah
Paschall, daughter of Mr. Stephen Paschall, a young lady whose amiable
disposition and eminent mental accomplishments add dignity to her
agreeable person." |

"Abram" Hollingsworth (Thomas Valentine , Vallentine , Henry ) was born on 19 Jan 1685 in Rockland
Manor, New Castle County, Delaware. He died in Nov 1748 in Opeckan,
Frederick County, Virginia.
Abraham Hollingsworth was a Quaker who was born in
Delaware in 1686. He came to this area about 1729 and settled in the
area called Shawnee Springs where his son, Isaac Hollingsworth, built
"Abramâs Delight" in 1754. Family tradition says that
Abraham Hollingsworth paid for his land three times: "First a cow,
a calf, and a piece of red cloth to the Shawnee Indians: next a sum of
money to the Kingâs agent; and finally a sum of money to Lord
Fairfax." Abraham and his family were members of Hopewell Friends
Meeting, which was formed in 1734. Hopewell is located in Frederick
County near Clearbrook. The Hollingsworth family established a
flourmill near the springs and was engaged in many other enterprises.
Notes for Abraham Hollingsworth:

Margaret Hollingsworth was born in 1715.
Notes for Margaret Hollingsworth:
We have a link with my family's Benjamin and your Margaret. Benjamin
Carter was born about 1710 in Bucks County, PA, the son of James and
Susanna Griffith.
The children of Benjamin and Margaret were: Thomas Carter, John Carter,
Benjamin Carter, Jr., Samuel Carter. Thomas was orphaned when Benjamin
died and Isaac Hollingsworth, of Frederick County, VA, was appointed
guardian on Nov 1, 1748. Only Thomas, the oldest, and lawful heir, was
given a guardian. The younger boys were not.
This record is unclear as to whether Margaret was also deceased. Maybe
this was a Quaker thing, to appoint a guardian to the oldest. |

The largest grave marker in the Hollingsworth - Parkins graveyard is
that of Isaac Hollingsworth. However this is not the Isaac who was the
son of Abraham. This Isaac was a cousin and is several generations
later. This Isaac was the son of Zebidae Hollingsworth and Lydia Allen.
He was born in 1771 and died in 1842. He married Hannah Parkins who is
also buried there. Some of the other family names of those buried in
the graveyard are Lytle, Brown, Smith, Richards, Neill and Gilkison. A
listing of all the graves taken from a graveyard census in 1931 exists
at the Handley Archives. |

Isaac Parkins acquired 1,425 acres in three tracts in 1735. One tract
of 725 acres included the graveyard location and the location of the
Parkins family home, which was west of the graveyard on what is now
Valley Avenue on the southwest corner of Jubal Early Drive and Valley
Avenue. This large brick house (no longer standing) was called
"Milltown" and later "Willow Lawn." |
37. Thomas
Valentine Hollingsworth Jr. (Thomas
Valentine , Vallentine ,
Henry ) was born on 23 Jan 1698/1699 in
Frederick County, Virginia. He died on 1 Sep 1753 in Pipe Creek,
Maryland.
He died after departing on a trip as a Quaker Missionary
to the Carolinas at age 54, he had been a minister for 25 years.
The Quaker Calender lists march as month 1 and Feb as month 12
before 1753. This accounts for the confusion of a couple of months on
all earlier Dates. A Quaker Minister in 1728 for 25 years..

50. Enoch
Hollingsworth (Samuel ,
Vallentine , Henry ) was born about 1702 in New Castle
County, Delaware. He died about Sep 1752 in Birmingham Twp, Chester
Co., Pa..
Enoch married (1) Elizabeth Chads daughter
of Henry Chads of USA. Elizabeth was born before 1705. She died in
Family Relationships not proven!!!.
All of the notes and quotes on the Chads family are
compliments of David Chads, England. Information will be updated as I
receive it.
"We can trace our ancestry back to Henry Chads who
was born in about 1650 and is recorded as being a
ship-owner and merchant in Belfast, Northern Ireland."
"Henry Chads (of Belfast) had five sons. The eldest,
Henry (we shall call Henry Chads of USA) was born in
about 1680 and emigrated with his family to America in
about 1725 having sold up all his possessions in
Northern Ireland. We know little of Henry of USAâs
four younger brothers."
"Henry Chads of USA married and had five children Â
three sons and two daughters. We only have records for
one of the sons, another Henry who we call Henry Chads
of Philadelphia who was born around 1710 and died
around 1752."
"We believe Henry Chads of Philadelphia was the
master of the brig âKing Davidâ which is listed in the
shipping movements published in âThe American Weekly
Mercuryâ and âThe Pennsylvania Gazetteâ during 1739
and 1740."
"Henry Chads of Philadelphia and Ann (died 1760) had
three children  another Henry  who we call Henry
Chads of Chichester and two unnamed daughters. Henry
of Chichester (born 1739) was sent to England in 1752,
after the death of his father to live with his English
uncle James Chads whose family lived in Chichester.
James was a distinguished Royal Naval Officer. Henry
of Chichester entered the Royal Navy and reached the
rank of Captain. He returned to America in about 1780
and was appointed âagent of transportâ during which
time he married (his second wife) Susannah Cornell of
Ithaca in 1783 believed to be the daughter of Samuel
Cornell, founder of Cornell University. Henry and
Susannahâs eldest son, Henry Ducie Chads, was 1st
Lieutenant on board HMS Java during the naval battle
with USS Constitution in 1812 of which there is much
detail on the internet!"
"From the above genealogical evidence it would seem
possible that Elizabeth Chads, born in 1705 according
to your records and who married Enoch Hollingsworth,
might have been one of the unnamed daughters of Henry
Chads of USA or even either of his brothers Thomas or
James who we know were alive in 1710?"
