Nicole pinned things on a dummy. Mitch and Felicia came back from France early to say the dollar had fallen. Nicole knew something was up because Mitch was smiling. Cass stomped in, muttering about the preface for Kathleen's book.
Jason found Mary in his room. She asked why he thought That Old Carrot had killed his wife.
Amanda tried to leave again. Sam told her he had something important to say. He told her his mother had fallen in love with a rich guy whom she told everything. His mom was shy. When she was so vulnerable to him, he dumped her for being so dependent. His mother cried. Sam heard her and was alarmed when she stopped and he found her just in time to retrieve her from suicide. He wept. Amanda was sympathetic. He said he hadn't told her the story to elicit pity but to make a point. She listened attentively.
Everyone was evasive. Nicole pressed Felicia and Mitch for information.
Mary is suffering from bruised ribs. She asked Jason if his knowledge had anything to do with the bomb. Jason was evasive. He said he hadn't known anything definitely until the attempt on his life. He referred to Elizabeth Love as Bets. He'd seen the Love silhouettes in Elizabeth's bedroom. He had never believed in [her] suicide. Mary asked why he'd been there. He got defensive. She threatened to go to the police.
Felicia and Mitch tried to downplay the fashion disaster they had left. They said everything was fine and fled, promising to tell all tomorrow. Cass told Nicole he didn't know where to begin with the preface. Nicole suggested starting with the fact that he loved her. Cass walked out without a word. She kicked herself.
Sam's family has always worn the mask a bit. Witness old stoneface Mitch. So Sam was afraid of opening up to Amanda. Amanda came over all wise and advised him to take a chance. They vowed undying love. Blech. [It never seemed to me that he was going out of his way to avoid vulnerability. Au contraire, he was so boyishly eager and open and so on. Go figure.] Kissing. Amanda agreed to go toy shopping. They argued about buying a football.
Jason said he figured That Old Carrot had killed Elizabeth and tried to make it look like suicide with a little arson thrown in for good measure. Mary asked why he would have killed his wife. Jason responded cryptically: "Why does anybody murder anybody?" He said he was guessing. Mary wondered if she was the reason. Scott knocked on the door. He was surprised to see Mary. Mary arranged to have dinner with him and Cheryl and herded them out.
Someone has apparently been following Mitch and Felicia. The whole fashion show turned out to be a hoax, or something. Room service wheeled in a trolley of good old American hamburgers and a surprise. Felicia was tickled.
Sam and Amanda did FAO Schwarz. I hate them. They played with kids and left laden with parcels, having paused occasionally to kiss.
Mitch doesn't cope well with European Food. And Frenchmen ogle too freely. Man, his hair is strange. Felicia made a dive for the surprise. A jewelry box.
Cass typed. [I thought from the sound of it he was tap dancing.] Nicole overheard him deducing that if Kathleen hadn't married him she might still be alive. He came into her room and threatened to call Mac and refused to do the preface. Nicole forbade him to give up. She advised him to say goodbye to Kathleen in order to be able to talk about her in the past tense.
Sam and Amanda returned to the hotel. They must have spent more money than Sam will make in a lifetime. Sam carried Amanda to the bed. He said he wanted to make her happy always.
Cass went out to the graveyard. He made a little speech to Kathleen's stone about their growing old together in the Caribbean. He wept a little and reminisced. He assured her he'd never forget her and he didn't want to let go but he had to. Goodbye, he said, and placed a rose in the snow.
Nicole was reading in bed when the tap dancing started again. She went and listened at the door of the connecting bathroom. Preface: Kathleen McKinnon was beautiful, stubborn, witty, determined, and, in her own way, incredibly loving. For too short a time, she was also my wife. This is her book, and there won't be any more. Read it and you'll learn two things: what a gifted writer she was and what a lucky man I was. I'll never forget the time we had together, or the night we said goodbye. Nicole retreated.
A diamond ring for Felicia. Mitch said, "Marry me." Felicia said OK, but she looked pensive.
Sam and Amanda were exuberantly naked.
