Kathleen came to Cass with a few new submissions. [2 novels -- My Heart Belongs in Khartoum and Sing a Song of Sandals. Also a book on The Southwestern Armadillo: Pal or Pest?.] Cass was on the verge of kissing Kathleen (and she of kissing back) when Felicia burst in. "Am I interrupting anything?"
The Corys (by whom I mean Mac Blaine Jamie and Ada) are missing those absent and plotting like fury. It's all coming together says Blaine.
Carl is at the police station. He's been indicted for violating environmental statute 247. Jamie's there, much to Carl's annoyance. Carl told Larry that he could sue them for harassment. Larry and Jamie were utterly offensive -- coolly insolent, as Carl has been so often in the past. Larry talked to Carl. "If you don't keep your nose clean you're going to find yourself a real regular down here." Jamie left. Carl told him to tell Mac that he was in his thoughts. Jamie advised Carl to stay out of trouble. Carl said to Jamie to tell his mother he was thinking about her too. Jamie gave him a look of utter loathing and left. Carl told Larry he wouldn't get away with this and Larry said he was getting away with it. Carl: Well what's to happen next? Must I face the guillotine? Be sent to Devil's Island? Or be shot at dawn? Larry: You're free to go. You're released on your own recognizance. Carl: Environmental statutes. You're such an amateur. Larry told Carl he was going to haul him back if he so much as jaywalked. He said he and the DA and the rest of the world were dying to indict him again. Carl told him if he hassled him again he'd personally see to it that he would be very sorry.
Mac is gleeful. "The wheels are in motion." Ada's a bit depressed that Nancy is having a hard time of it because of Perry being Carl's son. Mac got a call from Larry. They're thrilled to hear that Carl is quite angry. There is a surprise awaiting Carl at his office.
Tony had an immense man find out what Cass used the money for. (Who was neither Rocco nor Spike but just as tremendously large. Name of Duke.) Duke: He used it for a brooch. (Pronounced as it looks.) Tony: For a what? Duke: A brooch. You know those pins that dames wear on their shirts. Tony: Oh, a brooch (pronounced as it should be). Duke: Yeah. Was a real antique. I leaned on the pawn shop guy and he told me. Tony: Wait. $5,000 for an antique brooch? Duke: Maybe he was into antique jewellery. The way this guy dresses is -- Tony: No no no, that's just it. Why would Winthrop risk my finding out that he's masquerading as a lady, just to get an old pin out of a pawnshop. Duke: He wasn't the first one who hocked it neither. Tony: What do you mean? Duke: A broad. It was a broad. Tony: Did you get her name? Duke: McKinnon. Kat'leen McKinnon. Tony: Kathleen. Aha. Now it becomes clear. Winthrop didn't do it for himself, he did it for Kathleen. Duke: So? So he did it for a dame. So what? Tony: Aw, Duke, where's your heart? I find it a very touching, very romantic gesture. Y'know, I have to hand it to Winthrop. He's a better man than I thought. Duke: Anything you say, boss. Tony: IT was also an incredibly stupid gesture. Because now we know where he's vulnerable. We've located his Achilles heel. Duke: Oh, I had that once. Laid me up for months. Cast, everything.
Felicia left. She mentioned she's going to try to warm up the cold soup with Carl.
Thomasina and Carter are studying together. Doing Emily Dickinson together. Carter kept kissing her but she was not thrilled. She said they couldn't.
Clarice arrived at the police station to give Catlin a tie for his interview with Captain Delaney. (I hope he's got one of his own accord. He's not that strange.) Larry told Clarice he suspected Carl of being behind her blowing up. Catlin arrived with a tie. He was instructed not to lose his temper.
People with a warrant searching Carl's office. He refused to let them into his desk.
Catlin's interview is not going well. They asked him why he wanted to be a policeman and he made a terribly touching speech about Larry's wife and kids being proud of him [Larry] and Larry being able to count on his fellow cops. The nasty cop said he wasn't sure Catlin had any of the necessary qualifications for being a cop.
Tony came to Cass' room. Cass hid Kathleen and put on face cream and a robe. Kathleen heard Tony mention $5,000 borrowed by Krystle. Tony says this Friday Cass pays him $1,000 and then $1,000 every Friday for 5 more weeks. Cass is appalled. Tony left. Kathleen yelled at Cass.
Felicia threw herself at Carl rather. He accused her of being under Mac's direction so she left. She called him despicable.
Carter kissed Thomasina further. She's on edge. He said maybe they should end it. He left. She said she loved him.
Kathleen thought about Cass presenting her with the cameo. She told him not to wear so much mascara as it made him look cheap. She told Cass he should not have borrowed money from Tony again. She worries about him. They argued. She accused him of liking being Krystle and left.
Catlin told Larry about the interview. He said perhaps he didn't have the background to be a cop. Larry said he didn't have to be one just to oblige him. Catlin said he didn't think he had the background for anything. Larry said he did and the right thing would come along. Catlin thinks he's ruined his chances of becoming a policeman.
The Corys are thrilled with the way life is going. Felicia came and told them her mission was a failure. Apparently Mac did put her up to it. Carl called. He wants to meet Mac at Tallboys.
It has occurred to Cass that he can't get his hands on $6,000 in a hurry. He's not even sure it was worth it now.
Mac's going to set up vast security for the meeting. He's HAPPY.
