Donna told André the room had to be finished by the time Peter got home. André: Look I'm sorry darling but when you try to rush me I think only in mauve and chartreuse. Donna said it was her brother's birthday. André: You're giving him a living room for his birthday? He said it would hurry him up to be paid in full. Donna sounded like she was about to cough up when Marley walked in.
Tennessee Waltz. Cass & Dee. One, two, three. Kathleen told her she waltzed beautifully.
Sally wants to know what's going on. Catlin wants to talk to Peter alone for a minute. Peter keeps repeating the charges with relish. Sally left reluctantly. Peter: You should've told her, Catlin. She had a right to know. Catlin: S'pose you tell me something. Why are you doing this to me? COMMERCIAL. Peter tried to talk his way around him. They argued. Peter told Catlin he could still get married. Catlin is not too thrilled with the prospect of Sally honeymooning alone. Peter told him to face up to the charges like a man. Sally returned and asked what he was going to do. Peter started talking and Catlin told him fiercely to put a sock in it. Catlin's going to talk to Larry alone. Sally insisted everything would work out. Catlin told her she was so beautiful and he loved her and left. Peter told her this would've come out sooner or later. RIGHT, said Sally. She's not terribly thrilled with him right now. He told her she'd still be a beautiful bride.
Marley was aghast to see what Donna was doing. Donna sold some of her jewellery to fund this. She doesn't care what Peter says. Maisie called and told Marley the job was hers. Marley dashed out without telling Donna. Enter a strange man. "Okay, lady, where do you want the statue of the fertility goddess?" "ANDRÉ, come in here this instant."
Tom and Carter budgeting. Planning their lives around money and the baby and college. He's positive they'll manage. She hopes their baby's just like him.
Dee got horribly offended because Cass said she waltzed almost as well as Kathleen. I b'lieve she stomped on his foot. He's nursing it. Lily said she'd take Dee to Smiley's to mingle with kids her own age. Cass has to stay to favour his poor leg. Kathleen thinks she should stay to watch him watch his foot. Kissing. Dee surfaced. She wanted to watch soaps. No time for no soaps say Lily. Smiley's for them. Dee considered this. She ascertained that Kathleen would be there all day and plunked for Smiley's. She apologized for Cass' foot. They left. Cass (wistfully): If only I could think of something to take my mind off the excruciating pain. Kathleen thought of something.
Tom had to go. Carter's taking her to the hospital. They're happy. Grant is to look over their lists. "O man," says he. "This is impossible."
Peter took Sally home. (To the cabin.) He was impressed with its progress. Sally's proud of it. Peter keeps saying he can't understand why Catlin hadn't been completely honest with her about this. She grew tired of this and pointed out that she hadn't told HIM [Peter] about Kevin. This was a part of Catlin's past and he thought it was over. Peter said he was on her side. Sally suggested he talk to the sheriff and get him to drop the charges but Peter said this man had been humiliated by Catlin and he warn't likely to give up. Sally's determined that Catlin will have his new life and everything will work out. Peter said (vehemently/passionately) that he'd do anything to see she was happy. She thanked him for being a friend.
Marley. Debutante waitress (in the sense of being green, not an actual deb). So eager to begin that despite Maisie's well-meaning protests she landed as her first customers Tony and Rocco.
Cass and Kathleen discussing Dee. The only thing Kathleen regrets about Dee possibly succeeding is that time they hasn't got to snatch mightn't be so special. He says it will be. She has his word.
Marley bellowing. ADAM AND EVE ON A RAFT. Tony: I know our waitress is a very pretty girl, Rocco, but it's not polite to stare. Rocco: I can't help it, boss. I like 'em skinny. (Hysterics chez Cannell.) Tony sent Rocco to get his Agatha Christie from the car.
Marley's pleased with herself. She served Lily and Dee. To Lily's surprise. Tony's not thrilled by Dee's clothes. She spoke in Winthrop's favour. Donnaefused to make a scene there. Marley continued waitressing. Donna then stumbled across Dee. (Who made a deal with Cass: 1/2 day clothes SHE likes, 1/2 day clothes debs wear. She's in clothes SHE likes now.)
Grant told Carter there was no way he could do everything on the list. He advised him to cut down on school. Carter got mad. Grant told him he had to face it. He suggested they not move into their own ap't tout de suite. Carter's determined to give Tom a good life. Grant told him he'd help him if ever he needed it.
JOE MADE THE FORCE. HUZZAH HUZZAH. He thanked Catlin for his help. Catlin said he hadn't done all that much. Joe said there was a rumour that he [Catlin] would be returning to the force. Catlin ignored that and thanked him for helping with Kevin's bunk beds. Joe asked him why he was behaving so strangely. He said nothing. Joe invited him and Sally to his family's celebration-upon-Joe's-accession-to-policehood. Catlin doesn't think so. Joe recalled that they're to get married (tomorrow they say). Larry hove into view and Catlin pursued him desiring speech. (Do you know who Joe reminds me of? Rabbit. Having all those friends-and-relations.) Larry asked if he had cold feet. Catlin said it was more serious than that. He's in a lot more trouble than he told him about.
Dee introduced Donna to Tony. Tony was very friendly. Cordial. He invited Donna to lunch with him. She declined. She has to leave. Mr. Jones. Mr. Giavanelli. Miss Evans. Rocco: Nice broad. Tony said Donna was utterly charmed by Dee.
Catlin told Larry the story of the nasty sheriff of Dry Creek. There is but one bar in the place. He and Willa were there. An intoxicated version of the lawman entered: he slobbered all over Willa (his very words). Willa objected. The sheriff persisted. Willa slapped him. He punched her. Catlin slugged him. (In the middle of this story I got up and paced frantically downstairs yelling I DON'T believe this.) And took it on the lam. He's not thrilled with his lawyer. Larry told him he could be put away for 3 years. He advised him to face the music and p'raps he'd get a break. Catlin's woebegone. He doesn't know what to tell Sally.
Cass and Kathleen not wanting to answer the door. Donna entered to yell at Cass about Dee. And her uncle. (Which uncle, said Cass. The loan shark, said Donna.) She's mad. She hasn't written the letter yet. AS LONG AS THERE'S BREATH IN MY BODY THAT GIRL WILL NEVER BECOME A DEBUTANTE.
Peter returned home. He's not thrilled with André. He called Kathleen at Cecile's to ask about her decision. He wanted to come over. She said not now. Tomorrow morning her house. She didn't tell Cass who it was.
Catlin told Sally he should go to Wyoming to face the charges. She said she'd been thinking and they could go right after the wedding and maybe get Kevin out of school, too and get a whole BUNCH of people with whom to cow the sheriff. Catlin was morosely pleased that she'd been planning in such a direction but he said he'd been thinking too and he wanted her to listen to him.
Dee doesn't like Donna either. She doesn't care. Lily told Cass & Kathleen that she thinks Donna's mad because of Marley's waitressing. Kathleen may've clued in to an extent.
It's not Peter's birthday. He's mad. They're yelling. (He & Donna.) He has to go out of town on Catlin's behalf. (He refers to them as Sally -- and Catlin. Donna's suspicious of his motives.) He said something about tentacles and no more redecorating.
Catlin told Sally he'd made it a principle never to dump his troubles on anyone else in the past. She said he hadn't had anyone before but now he had her. He said he didn't want to start a marriage in jail and he didn't want Kevin to have to deal with that. She said he was making it sound really terrible. He said it could be. He intends to go to Wyoming alone and face the charges (still alone) and when it's over he'll come back. She told him this was wrong because he was retreating from her. He said he'd been lying and he wasn't free and he loved her but he couldn't marry her.
