Cass arrived in New York and asked Miss Grimaldi's driver if she were associated with Tony the Tuna. She does not seem to be.
A friend of Jamie's wants to get rid of his apartment while he's on sabbatical. Kathleen immediately jumped at the chance to see it. Jamie tried to dissuade her.
Larry asked Dale to drop by on her way to school. Zane came with a letter for Catlin.
Jamie's friend was surprised at Jamie. Kathleen still wants to see it. Jamie said she should go ahead and inspect the apartment. They decided to go immediately. Kathleen asked what he taught on the way out. "CLASSICAL GREEK" said the man. MJ asked Jamie was wrong with the apartment. He won't tell her.
Felicia's publicity tour is taking her to New York. She has A LOT of books to sign.
Catlin doesn't want to open the letter. He told Larry he loved Sally more than he ever loved Brittany and he couldn't live with Britt out of guilt. He said he wished Britt could be her old self and tell him to go to hell if he didn't love her. Larry said p'raps that was what the letter said. Catlin opened the letter and made a very loud sound like he smashed something or slammed something and yelled "I should've known it" [initially I thought he said "Confound it" but that's so unCatlin I listened again]. He left; Larry called after him.
Cass is wanted to dress three women. "They" can't [or won't] answer his questions. "This is like some garment district Twilight Zone" muttered Cass. He was presented with the women who have been instructed not to speak. He was given a cartload of perfume to select scents for them. He did so in no time flat. "Rash but good." was the verdict.
MJ beat up on Jamie who confessed it was across the hall from Cass. BIG DEAL said MJ. She said the house would be quiet without Kathleen. Jamie suggested she move out and in with him. She said it could be too habit-forming in effect. He wants her to be with him. KISSING.
Clarice feels sorry for Brittany. She was utterly distraught when Larry told her Catlin'd asked for a divorce. Larry pointed out that Catlin loved Sally. Clarice does not want Catlin not to love Sally but she likes wifeinitial. Larry thinks she should get on with her life and find a man who really loves her. Dale arrived. Larry sent Clarice to fold laundry. He confronted Dale with the straw. She played dumb. He gave her a big speech about drugs and tried to be nice. She got hysterical and left.
Zane told Britt he'd delivered the letter but hadn't stayed to observe Catlin's reaction. He wants to take off in the boat with her. She seems to be on about Catlin rather. Zane told her she'd likely have better luck with him if she played hard to get. [oh yes you'll see how far it got Sally. Across the Atlantic zweimal and an assortment of vacant buildings.] she said she loved Catlin I think. Zane said she'd made that abundantly clear and he was going on the boat with her or without her. She said she'd go. He was terribly pleased.
Catlin appeared at the complex and found Sally in a conference room all spread out [I mean her artwork, not the actual physical being]. He told her Brittany had written saying she couldn't stop being his wife even if he didn't want her. Sally said she couldn't blame her she'd feel the same way. Catlin said he thought he'd been going about this whole thing all wrong.
Kathleen yelled at Jamie for not telling her about Cass' apartments. She told Jamie Cass' ego made her mad and she didn't want him to thinking she was pursuing him. Jamie subtly got her to take the apartment.
Hair and makeup. Cass feels a little silly. He wants to see Miss Grimaldi. The assistant woman asked if he wanted to leave. He said not. He's selecting hairstyles. The silent women's names are Lisa, Maureen and Rebecca [he found them out while the assistant was out of the room]. The assistant doesn't like Cass but the veiled woman says if he chooses the right clothes they have their man.
Catlin has this theory that Brittany has been living in the past. Since Evan died she's been living for the sake of FINDING BEST BELOVED JOSH. He says that Josh Peterson exists no longer and he thinks Brittany should find out who she is. She cannot go on loving somebody who doesn't love her. Sally: But it's not going be easy. Catlin: Well none of this is easy baby. Sally: You know what I think? Catlin: What? Sally: That you're wonderful. Catlin: [doubtless quite pink with pleasure] You do? Sally: And strong. Catlin: Aw, shucks [periodically I wonder what on earth a shuck is and just as periodically I look it up in the dictionary. 'Tis a husk or pod.] She said he was doing the right thing. He said he kept wondering whether he was just doing this because he wanted to be free. [This makes no sense. Free of Brittany? Free of wives? Silly boy.] Sally asked if he loved her [Brittany]. He seemed to respond in the negative. Sally said he was therefore doing the right thing. He's going to see her right now. Catlin: I think I should. Why? Sally: BECAUSE I have this conference room all to myself for another hour. [Sound of arms going about someone. Also contended murmurings etc..] Catlin: Mmm, baby, I'd love to. But I've got to go really. He disentangled himself and got a little distance away before she called him back. CATLIN, WHAT IF SHE DOESN'T [listen to him] WHAT DO WE DO THEN?
Clarice is mad with Larry because he jumps on her [figuratively speaking] when she stands up for Brittany and sends her away so he can question the baby sitter. He apologized. He told her about Dale and cocaine. She was incredulous. He won't have her anymore. Larry can't figure out how she gets money for her habit. Clarice said her diamond studs were missing. Larry reluctantly has to tell the parents.
Jamie is looking at Sally's work. He likes it. [Like Peter but it's not offensive at all. Jamie is a nice guy.] They talked about Sally's life being controlled by Brittany. She's pleased with the way Catlin's handling it but she feels Brittany's being difficult. Jamie said he understood she and Catlin weren't living together anymore. Sally mumbled sort of that they'd decided it would be best for Catlin to figure things out alone. Jamie asked where she was staying. She told him at the cabin. He applauded this as a Good Idea: a reminder to Catlin that there would be Someone to come home to. He said Living With The Person One Loved was the best thing in the world and Catlin wouldn't let that go. [One hears the little imp screaming MJ MJ in the back of Mr. Frame's mind.] Sally loves Jamie [he's her brother, it's allowed].
Kathleen told MJ she'd seen Cass' apartment. And gone all mushy inside. But Ralph [the Greek man] asked her out. Kathleen doesn't know how living so close to Cass will affect her. Will he lose his glamour or drive her insane? MJ told Kathleen about Jamie's invitation [if I may so call it]. Kathleen was surprised to hear she was bothering to consider NOT moving in with the Nice Kind man she loves. MJ is not sure proximity would keep them nice to each other. Kathleen confessed that her heart went pitty-pat at the sight of Cass' locked door.
Zane told Catlin Brittany wasn't about and he did not know when she would be. Catlin asked if he would tell him if he knew. Probably said Zane. Catlin said he [Zane] didn't like him [Catlin] very much [we are clever]. Zane said it didn't matter how he felt. Catlin asked why he was doing all this for Britt. Zane said he guessed he owed him that much considering she's his wife. Catlin said that was a LEGAL TECHNICALITY and he owed him nothing. Zane invited him in and told him a whole big story about how he'd found Brittany half dead with Catlin interjecting things about the funeral. Zane said she was different now. Catlin agreed he didn't even know her anymore. He asked why Zane looked after her. Zane said he'd thought it was obvious he was in love with her.
MJ said she hadn't told Jamie no yet. Kathleen told her a little story about porcupines and then declared it had nothing to do with the situation she just thought it was a nice little story that's all. LIES ALL LIES -- it was Schopenhauer and they couldn't get close to each other because of the prickles. MJ thinks [and Kathleen can see] that Pops would kill her if she went to live with Jamie.
Cass' attempts at levity are not appreciated. SUDDEN STRANGE SILENCE and "WELL WELL WELL" from Cass. Oh it's the women and they look smashing in their clothes. Enter la Grimaldi.
Britt returned with food and fish bait. It turned out Zane intends for them to be gone a long time. He told her Catlin would be there when they got back.
Felicia is on the phone to Lily. Her autograph hand is dead she couldn't sign another book for Nancy Reagan. LIBERACE APPEARED [wanting an autograph] and Felicia when she figured it out was thrilled.
Sally thought about Catlin figuring out Brittany signing "I love you" and then about her [Sally] telling Catlin she loved him and his kindred response. Jamie appeared startling her.
Cass' talents are appreciated by the veiled Daphne Grimaldi. She has a proposition for him.
Trois heures, c'est toujours trop tard ou trop tot pour tout ce qu'on veut faire. HOW TRUE. Such a feeling as I get at 3:00 p.m. most days.
I passed the international cinema the other day; the picture to my amusement was entitled "MY FIRST WIFE".
Catlin as part of rodeo act at this point is LUDICROUS. I find it easier to imagine Brittany as a policewoman.
Peter just EXUDES foulness. It's practically tangible; we could likely bottle it and sell it to murderers [women wanting to kill their husbands, mostly. Not as a general rule vice versa].
