Michael confronted That Old Carrot with what he knew about the Photograph. Reginald pretended to know nothing about it. Michael told him Bridget had seen him with it.
Jamie waited for his date at Tops, chatting with Sara to pass the time. He got his date from the following personal ad: "attractive woman, well-traveled, wishing to spend quiet evenings in conversation with professional man, especially a doctor. Seeking someone who will appreciate me for more than my looks." Sara scoffed at him for believing everything he read, especially the "attractive" part. A glamorous brunette appeared looking for Jamie. He shot Sara a look of triumph and chuckled offensively.
Robert Hogan has had his "THE RÔLE OF..." Read more times than anyone in the entire history of the world. With Peters, they expect us to get the hang of it after two days. [I guess since Vince is all alone at the beginning of each day they can't throw it into the conversation.]
Mary: [in such a weary voice] Gin. [And a little sigh.] Ada: I can't stand the excitement. Mary: well, you can't expect a night when there's a whole BUNCH of customers when they've announced a big storm coming. Ada: I don't expect a whole BUNCH of customers, just ONE LOUSY CUSTOMER will do it. [enter Adam] and here comes Adam now. Mary: AHA. Adam: I resemble that remark. I'm not a lousy customer, I'm just in love. Hello, Mary. Mary: hello, Adam. Adam: anybody seen MJ? Mary: no, isn't she working tonight? Adam: no, the captain pulled her in, said that he wanted to talk to her. And after that we were supposed to meet here. Mary: well, we haven't seen her.do you want to wait? Adam: yeah — I don't know, I'm pretty hungry. Say, you girls don't know some place where I can get a meal, do you? Ada: one lousy customer and it has to be you. Get over here, come on, sit. What do you want? Adam: let's see... I know. How about one of those club sandwiches that are a real pain to make? Ada: oh, you're wonderful. WONDERFUL. DON'T CHOKE ON THE TOOTHPICKS. Mary worried about the captain's calling MJ off duty for a chat. Ada went into the kitchen and found Vince sneaking in for the sandwich she leaves for him. She told him to stay down and she'd give him some soup. He said he had to stay out of jail in order to prove that Reginald had framed him. Out in the dining room Adam told Mary that Captain Delaney thought that the family knew where Vince was. Ada told Vince she thought he was right. She tried to find out where Vince was staying. She told him she'd need to know in case of emergency. He told her he was staying in the Grimes boarding house on Pitcairn. It is a well-known Not Nice street. She got rid of Vince just before Mary came in. Mary guessed.
That Old Carrot told Michael that he had shown Donna a photograph of her children [lying by omission, are we? How CLEVER] in an attempt to remind her just what she had to fight for. Michael demanded to see it. Reginald said he didn't know where it was. Michael lunged at him. Reginald suffered a reproachful heart pain. Michael accused him of faking.
Jamie chatted with the ad woman. She doesn't sound like a dingbat, but she did say that she specified doctors in the ad because she liked men who knew how to care and nurture and weren't bound up in a macho image. [Oh.] And she made certain that he ordered his drink first so that she could exclaim over the coincidence that she was going to order the very same thing. He told Sara she was too good to be true. Sara agreed. Zack arrived. He asked Jamie what his date's name was. It's Melanie. [he's forgotten her last name.] He joined her at a table. Zack thinks he knows Melanie from somewhere. Zack went to bug Quinn. She is lunching swamped by bills. Zack is not the thrill he obviously thinks he is.
Mary and Ada forbade Adam to set foot in the kitchen. [Poor Adam. Nobody tells him anything.] Ada told her Vince hadn't taken the money because she'd interrupted. Mary said it could be better for Vince to turn himself in. Captain Delaney let himself in the back door with MJ. Ada sent Mary and MJ into the dining room. She offered Captain Delaney clam chowder in a very conspiratorial fashion.
Jamie and Melanie have so much in common. Zack is staring.
Quinn assured Zack Frame-Harding's finances would be better come spring. Julie wandered past with Giles Thompson. [No. I can't believe that. HA. On relistening I find his name is Charles.] He works at Brava. He has an extremely affected Mart vocabulary, but without any of Mart's redeeming qualities. Zack checked to see if Julie had cab fare home and left her to her own devices. Quinn yelled at him for not having investigated Charles more thoroughly.
Captain Delaney's name is Joe. [Have I suggested before that Captain Delaney might be Sara's Joe?] He told Ada it was his job to find and arrest Vince as it was her duty to tell him everything she knew. They went into the dining room where MJ was attempting to make Mary tell her what she knew. Mary was denying knowing anything. Captain Delaney warned everyone that not telling was obstructing justice and they could be put in prison. No one said anything.
Quinn is strange about charming young men. She refused to tell Zack why. He said that all of her poise and self-assurance was just to cover the fact that she was afraid of men. [I'm furious. I resent extremely the implication that a cool-headed businesswoman is only a businesswoman because she's afraid of men [the one important thing in this world, ha ha] and since she's having major financial difficulties she's not a wonderful businesswoman either. Mac never suffers this kind of indignity.] He went back to the bar. He remembered how he knew Melanie. Sara asked him to talk about it.
Captain Delaney warned MJ that she could be risking her job. She said she knew. He left. MJ doesn't know anything [but it's not for want of trying]. She pursued Mary into the kitchen and yelled at her. Mary pulled herself together and told her she wasn't to talk to her mother that way. She said she didn't know where Vince was. MJ accused her of lying. Ada came in to shut them up. The captain let himself in on the feeble pretext of having lost his scarf. Ada showed it to him in his pocket. He left. She bust up the Mary MJ fight and had Adam take MJ into the dining room. Mary begged Ada to tell her where Vince was. Ada gave in. She sent her out with the money and Vince's gloves.
Reginald thought about New Year's and driving with Mary. Bridget appeared and groveled so as not to lose her job or her head for having told Michael. He said her job was secure and he believed in telling the truth. He was pleased to hear Michael had gone and Victoria was eating in her room. He muttered to himself about being able to do something about McKinnon and dismissed Bridget. He phoned someone and said he wanted Vince found.
Mary knocked on Vince's door and demanded that he let her in. She threatened to besiege him. He flung open the door and said "what do you want?" in a very Jud-like way. She gave him the gloves. He refused her money and her phony concern. He asked why she'd come.
Jamie and Melanie made arrangements to go back to her place. Sara threw herself in front of them and made it plain to Jamie that Melanie chewed up doctors and spit them out, having received a generous cash settlement. She has had three doctor husbands in five years. Never been prosecuted. Melanie left. Jamie swore off dating.
Mary tried to convince Vince to give himself up and let their family help clear him. He accused her of being afraid she would hurt Reginald. She found his map.
Adam tried to get MJ to get along with her mother better. She didn't like it. She has to go back to the Pig Whistle. He said he'd come with her to protect her little and to remind her that things would get better and better.
Sara: come on, it's not so bad. Everyone misjudges someone once in a while. Jamie: I can't believe it. I mean, I was making time with LIZZIE BORDEN. Sara: well, it won't happen again. Jamie: that's right, it won't happen again because I'm through with this dating stuff. Sara: won't that be a little difficult? Jamie: why? I've got my family, my job, my friends, my pet turtle. I haven't got time for all this stuff anyway. She said she couldn't wait to tell Joe about this evening. He said he thought Joe was a figment of her imagination. Michael arrived with news about the Vulture.
Mary yelled at Vince for wanting revenge. He dared her to turn him in.
