Nancy wants to stay with Chris.
Britt elaborated on her confession and told Catlin he should understand she couldn't let Evan go. She said she regretted making it hard for him and asked him to forgive her because she couldn't bear to lose both of them.
Cass is storing the Princess in a sub-basement. He was given the only key and took her down with Kathleen. They intend to catch Carl. Carl as an Indian arrived upstairs with his beeper. The keeper of the key accosted him.
Catlin told Britt he'd started to have hope again and he'd wanted Evan back. She asked if he wondered why she felt all empty inside. He said he'd felt like that all along. She said at least they were together. He said it had been the worst year of his life. They are both very subdued. They embraced and she told him it would be all right. He kissed her.
Carl neglected to adopt his Indian voice in telling the man to bloody well mind his own business. He put him out of commission and hid when Kathleen & Cass came back up discussing what to do when they captured him. ["well we handcuff him, we tie him up, we try to drive a silver stake through his heart."] They found the man unconscious and [they] worried.
Daniel asked Sally why she found Catlin so enchanting. She told him she'd been engaged to another man when she met him and she just kept running into him until she realized she didn't want to marry the other guy. She said Catlin hadn't even liked her in the beginning [the shoe, my darling, was on the other foot]. Daniel said Catlin had a certain negativity about him. Sally disputed this. She said Catlin had a hard time trusting people right off but once he liked someone he'd give his whole heart. Daniel asked how many women had done that too. She said that was rude and Catlin was principled and she didn't need to defend him to him. Daniel asked why it mattered what he thought. Sally said Daniel had seen Catlin only at his worst and he thought she was some sort of victim. She's not thrilled with his [Catlin's] reaction to her job but she loves and trusts him. Daniel asked if Catlin trusted her. She said yes. He asked why he was always so angry. She explained he never liked Michaud and didn't like people mangling her and ogling her. Daniel told her a nasty little story about how he'd been involved with an Australian woman. Life was swell until one night he sampled a stranger without her ever knowing. Although he never repeated the experience ever afterward he couldn't trust her because he couldn't be trusted. Australian love went bust. She said that wasn't why Catlin was jealous because they'd never be unfaithful to each other.
Catlin kept on kissing Brittany. Suddenly he recalled himself and declared it a no go. Brit said neither of them had ever received an instant of comfort after Evan died and this would make it better. She said they needed each other.
Kathleen suspects Carl's hand. Cass went back for the key which he'd left in the door. He told Kathleen to call an ambulance and beat it back to the hotel. The phone had been killed by Carl.
Catlin made for the door but changed his mind and carried Britt to bed instead.
Chris has a story to tell. Chris: there was this cowpoke and his name was Earl. Nancy: EARL? Chris: hey, who's telling this story? Nancy: I know, but Earl's kind of a weird name for a cowboy, don't you think? Marley: oh, yeah, kind of. Chris: are you two going to keep interrupting? Nancy: sorry. Chris: anyway, Earl had red hair and a great smile and all the girls loved him. Nancy: I'll BET. Chris: yeah. BUT Earl only loved one girl. He was a very faithful guy. [All ye unfaithful Cowboys please take note.] Are you listening? Marley: oh. Oh yes. I can hear guitars playing and everything. Chris: good. So her name was — Nancy: who? Chris: Earl's girl. Nancy: no, wait, don't tell me. Pearl. Chris: don't be ridiculous. It was Shirl — -ey. And she was a very attractive girl this Shirl-ey, she had blue eyes and a little turned up nose and blonde hair and she wore those little gingham dresses with the puffy sleeves — Nancy: YUK [sounding wildly like Stephanie Vanderkellen]. Chris: now you be quiet. But the best thing about Shirl-ey was that she was devoted to Earl. Marley: oh, I'll bet she did everything he told her. Chris: well yeah, within reason. Nancy: GO ON. Chris: OK, I can see you're hooked. So anyway one day the sheriff comes to Earl and says "we have this terrible varmint making a big mess in town and somebody's got to slay it. And we're offering you the job." so Earl went back to Shirley to tell her about it. You with me so far? Nancy: yeah. Chris: all right. So surely stopped putting up plum preserves and she put her little lily white hand in Earl's — Marley: oh, I hope it wasn't STICKY. Chris: I'll ignore that. And SHE said "Earl, you do whatever you have to do and I'll be here waiting for you just as long just so long as you come home safe to me." [he gave up the falsetto somewhere in the middle of whatever.] Nancy: oh, come on, Shirl-EY really said that? Chris: hey, would I lie about a thing like this? So, Earl was so inspired by the faithful devotion of his little wife Shirley waiting at home by the firelight that he ran into the woods and he slew that varmint. Marley: and what was his name? The varmint's I mean. Chris: Merle. Nancy: Oh no. Chris: ANYWAY. Earl rode home safe and sound BECAUSE of that loyal little woman who was waiting there at home for him. So. What did you think? Nancy: I thought it was — interesting. How about you, Marley? Marley: I thought it was about the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard. LAUGHTER.
Carl found the statue in the sub-basement.
Edouard's glad Felicia's back. Daphne reverted to her childlike ways when she returned to the Chapin estate. He's arranged a press conference to announce Daphne had nothing to do with Lesoleil any more. She doesn't want to talk about finding another girl for Zane. A hot director wants lunch with Edouard. Edouard's feeling like a has-been again. Felicia gets annoyed when he gets like that.
It is obvious to Nancy that Marley wants Jake. For once Marley didn't deny it. She [Marley]'s impressed by how much Chris cares about her [Nancy]. She told Nancy about Jake not wanting to skinny dip. Nancy told her to pursue Jake if she loved him. Marley told her Jake had slept with Victoria. Nancy told her Victoria would do anything for any guy. Marley said the sad thing was Jake cared about Victoria. Nancy advised her to go with her feelings [speaking as one who knows what it's like to be too late to sleep with someone viz. Perry.] she's not going to make the same mistake with Chris.
Carl pointed a gun at Cass and made him very nervous. He [Cass] didn't recognize him [Carl] and offered to pay him more.
Kathleen upstairs is very worried. She can't leave Cass.
Felicia wants to get Carl alone for half an hour. Edouard's kisses knock her for a loop.
Marley left Nancy and Chris alone. He kissed her. Marley returned prematurely.
Britt and Catlin in repose. She doesn't want to talk to him there. She's satisfied that this is the appropriate end to their marriage. They have their own lives to live and she feels up to it now. She loved him at first sight but it's different now. She said this couldn't go on and got him to say he wouldn't have guilt attacks and be mean to her on their account. He has to be alone for a while. She said Evan & tonight were a beautiful memory and left. She seems purged.
Cass said he didn't respond well to the strong silent type. Kathleen said "Cass" and there were struggling sounds and a BONG. Cass told Kathleen to get out. He recognized Carl. Slug. Slug. Kathleen told Carl not to hurt him anymore. Slug. Carl said something about philistines.
A lot of thumping around that sounds like packing or searching or something. The music changed. Rustling. The music changed again.
