Mitch watched Felicia sleep [in a real hotel room and everything] and recalled his promise of fireworks. She woke up. He explained that Donna and the brothers [one undead, one not] had returned home. He wouldn't let her get up. He shoved a thermometer in her mouth. [Have you ever known me to let an opportunity to bring up Donna's memorable "I am doing something. I brought a thermometer" slip? Consider it brought up.]
Mary told Vince Ada was covering for her because she would be busy. He said she had to attend a neighbourhood meeting about the stalker. Her date arrived.
MJ wandered into the office and found Adam and Lisa with their heads together over the computer. Horrible Adam spoke to her as if she were just any old gofer and not his particular beloved gofer. She suggested they knock off. He said he had to keep up with the stalker before he killed someone near and dear. He's very pleased to have got Nancy out of the way. He was very firm about not resting. Lisa assured MJ she'd help. MJ, looking rather grim, retreated to her desk as Jamie burst in and sent Val on an errand. Adam told Jamie not to boss a member of his task force around. Jamie told Lisa he had plans for her. Adam said he had too. She has to get impressions over chez Cory and Jamie isn't to drop by. Exeunt Adam and Lisa. MJ thumped the desk and told Jamie the wedding had been postponed indefinitely. Jamie: WHAT? Are you kidding? I don't believe this. Whose idea was this? MJ: I don't know. Anyway it's not anybody's fault, you know, it's just this case. Jamie: was it Adam? I thought he was in love with you. MJ: He is. HE IS in love with me. It's just that sometimes things get overwhelming. Jamie: I told that braindead jerk that if he ever hurt you I'd take him apart limb by limb and that's just what I'm going to do. She laughed and said everything would be fine. He attempted to comfort her by saying Adam needed to have his head examined. He had to leave but promised to return. "Whataguy" she said, smiling.
Chuck kissed Mary's hand. She was gracious. Vince was less than thrilled. He took Mary aside and warned her against dating strangers. She said smugly she'd already had MJ check him out. He's a Rhodes scholar and he was in the Peace Corps in Bolivia for two years. "BOLIVIA. South America. Now I get it." "get what?" He accused her of yearning to be treated like a señora. She said that was ridiculous and left with Chuck.
Mitch made Felicia stay in bed for a temperature of 98.8. She looked mutinous. He squelched her. He made her drink water. She said it tasted like window cleaner. She expressed her gratitude. They quarrelled because he refused to admit he was being sweet. Flowers were delivered. Felicia was smug until they turned out to be from Dr Glaser. She bugged him about Dr Glaser. He advised her to pursue him. He gazed out the window. They quarreled. Mitch got a mysterious phone call about fountains of delight and sparing no expense. He told Felicia it was a wrong number. She didn't believe him.
Adam asked Lisa to try to feel from the killer's point of view rather than the victim's. He helped to set the scene. He produced his tape recorder and started to talk as the killer. Lisa held a surgical glove and got into the mood.
Felicia badgered Mitch about his surprise. He was closemouthed. Dinner arrived. Felicia mentioned skyrockets but said this was better. She yelled at him for looking out the window. Felicia: now you're doing something and you're not telling me what it is and if you don't I'm going to pour this whole bottle of champagne on your head. Mitch: oh, that's a mature idea, I like that. Felicia: oh, and it's mature to keep secrets and be weird. [She made a great face.] He toasted her health. Suddenly a fireworks display erupted outside. Felicia was delighted.
Lisa said the killer hadn't wanted to come inside but something unclear had forced him. She lost it. Adam was impressed. He asked her to concentrate again. She wasn't able to say it was Tony. He asked her to relax and try again. He asked why the killer hadn't wanted to come in and kill Nancy. She said someone strong had made him. Adam was stunned to have an accomplice brought into it. He asked who it was. She didn't know.
How does Mitch the ex-con bartender manage to spare no expense? Felicia told Mitch how nice he was. He disclaimed all responsibility.
Vince said goodnight to the neighbourhood. Mary came in alone. Vince: Mary, the killer is a maniac. You can't be too careful. Mary: he's not going to come after me again. Vince: why not? [enter Chuck.] You know how he feels about married women going out with other guys. Chuck: Mary? Married? Well, what does your husband have to say about this? Vince: why don't you ask me? I'm her husband. [Mary LOOKED at him.] She explained that it was complicated. Vince kept putting in his two cents and getting glared out for his trouble. He followed her explanation with a look of intense concentration. Chuck admitted it was a complex situation. They have a date for a film festival next week. Cheryl told Mary Vince was taking her dating pretty hard. Mary told her it was none of her business and went into the kitchen to "bring Mr. McKinnon into 1987."
Adam protected Lisa from reporters as they went back to the office. He ordered them to be put out. Jamie yelled at him for not keeping her out of the public eye because it could cause the killer to go after her. Lisa told Jamie very firmly that Adam took very good care of her. Jamie took Lisa out. Adam was annoyed because he hadn't finished with Lisa. MJ told him the case may have come between them but she wasn't letting it come between anyone else.
Felicia and Mitch dined. He kept denying being responsible for the fireworks. She accused him of being jealous of Dr Glaser. Some hotel employee gave him away. Mitch admitted it defensively. Their tablecloth looks like they stole it from Tops. He draped her shawl around her shoulders. She thanked him for everything. Kissing.
Mary tried to talk to Vince. She said she'd thought it would be good for them to see other people. He accused her of thinking life was "a story about Mary." She denied it. He said she had probably thought he'd been celibate without her all this time but he hadn't and he'd continued to date other women so there.
Lisa asked Jamie what he was so worried about. He pretty much said what MJ had said about their breaking up.
Adam told MJ he'd solved the case with Lisa's help no matter what Jamie said. MJ said she hoped he did catch the killer [hey, now, this is a WE, here. Show a little team spirit, you guys.] but asked MELODRAMATICALLY how many lives he was willing to ruin along the way. She stomped out.
This life-ruining thing is a bit much. Catching killers is important stuff and MJ should understand.
