Bridget spilled a lot of tea much to Donna's distress. Victoria left.
The folk at Smiley's implored Marley to stay. Perry asked her how well Jake knew Bridget. Marley doesn't know. Jake appeared. Perry asked what Bridget had been doing in his room.
Sally's talking to Aunt Liz. She says she and Catlin didn't have a fight but the atmosphere is strained. And she feels badly because no matter what she says it sounds [to her at least] like she's nagging. Aunt Liz thinks if Catlin tells the truth all will be well but Sally said she can see Catlin's position. Aunt Liz lowered her voice to a meaningful stage whisper to say "Catlin sleeping on the couch is no answer." [I laughed.] Sally said all kinds of things about how she hoped things would get back to normal and she'd be able to tell Kevin she was his mother but now ... and she'd really botched it in her talk with Brittany. She said Catlin had told her that they were married because that was how they felt but she wouldn't feel right about it until Brittany was made to understand it too. She thinks it would be easier if she could hate Brittany but she can't and she can even see why Catlin loved her. She feels Brittany is controlling her life.
Brittany wants to talk about the future. Catlin doesn't. He always sounds like he's playing charades when he's alone with her. She's looking for an apartment. He's skirting as many issues as he possibly can. He told her she had to be happy when he wasn't there. She reminded him of the cabin they'd lived in. The roof leaked. Dripped onto his pillow. He wanted them to switch sides [I don't suppose it occurred to him to PATCH or RESHINGLE the roof. OR MOVE THE BED.] so he wouldn't drown. He doesn't want her to worry. Joyce appeared. Brittany's eager to be released from hospital. Catlin had to go back to work. He'll be back later. Britt thought about Catlin's promises to always be there looking after her again.
Catlin talked to Larry. Joyce appeared brandishing drug inventories. They discussed the Plains Motel and Willa. Larry told him about MJ and Wallingford. Catlin announced his intention to go to the Plains Motel Larry told him not to. Larry gave him a copy of the photo of Willa [with Catlin?] for him or Britt. [Has Catlin had his photograph taken with every woman in existence? It seems to've landed him in a fair bit of trouble, this tendency ...] Larry dispersed. Catlin asked Joyce where the Plains Motel was, the jerk.
Tom's strange over a pair of hand-knitted booties from Quinn. She's ecstatic. Quinn knitted them herself. Tom told her about losing her job. Quinn was pleased by Carter's reaction. Tom's not. She won't accept the cheque. Quinn tried to persuade her. They talked about Carter's shattered dreams.
Carter has an interview at KBAY. So does Jake. For jobs. Off they go. Nancy tried to pursue the Bridget issue. Jake said he'd lost his wallet at the Loves' and she'd returned it. Marley asked him to a movie. He stammered and turned her down. He left. Marley's self-esteem plummeted and she went to study. Perry and Nancy are worried about her. Nancy hasn't decided where she's going to school. He has a surprise date for her tonight.
Clarice came to visit Brittany. She brought flowers. Britt's still looking at apartments. She said she and Catlin would move in together. Clarice was weird.
Catlin returned to the cabin for dinner. Sally asked about Brittany's health. She pushed a little and he exploded momentarily but apologized swiftly and contritely. "No it's just--um ... she hit me with something today." [I vaguely assumed it was the thing of flowers or something but it turned out he just meant the news that she was apartment hunting for THEM.] Sally asked if he'd told her that that was OUT OF THE QUESTION and Catlin was forced to admit he hadn't. He insisted she was weak and he'd make her understand when she was stronger and Sally launched into this tirade about how Brittany WAS strong and she was just doing this to get what she wanted and she had to be an adult and Catlin was just hurting everyone else in trying not to hurt Brittany. [quote: "I know that you don't like to hurt anyone or anything." Immediately I thought of the Tin Man in the book not wanting to step on any bugs and crying when he did so his jaw rusted shut ...] Catlin accused her [halfheartedly] of being hard but she persisted until Kevin came out of his room looking for food. Catlin told them to go ahead he had something to do and left. Kevin asked if he'd done something wrong.
Bridget brought Marley tea and spilled tea [a-purpose?] all over her. She sent Marley to change clothes [she told her which she should wear; presumably what Victoria had been wearing earlier].
Carter and Jake had good interviews. They're happy. Mailroom clerk and apprentice cameraman. Carter rushed out to get food to celebrate. Jake and Tom talked. I think she had a dizzy spell. She sent him to get a glass of milk.
Marley asked Donna if she'd TALKED to Jake last night and put him off taking her out. Donna denied it. She couldn't find her spare keys. Marley suggested Peter had them.
Victoria with keys.
Tom's strange. [unconscious?] Jake's worried. "Thomasina. Thomasina. Thomasina."
Sally explained to Kevin that they weren't angry with him and they loved him and each other very much. Kevin is worried because Catlin left. Sally said he'd be back. Kevin said his mom and dad used yell at each other too sometimes. Sally said they weren't really yelling at each other. Kevin said they'd been fighting. Sally said people sometimes fought with people they love. Kevin said he was afraid they'd go away. Sally told they'd all stay there together. She promised. He asked who Brittany was. He heard the name in the yelling, he means fighting. Sally explained that a long time ago [she really emphasized that aspect] before either of them had met Catlin he'd been married ["Like Joey's Dad?"] and way back then Brittany was his wife. Not any more said Kevin. There was a knock at the door and it was Clarice. [They'd hoped it would be Catlin but no such luck.] Kevin was packed off to his room. Clarice said this thing with Brittany was pretty hard on her [Sally]. Sally said it was harder on Catlin. Clarice said perhaps she should get out to forget about it. [I'm surprised she didn't suggest an excursion to the Plains Motel.] Sally said it wasn't that easy. Clarice then said she'd GONE TO THE PLAINS MOTEL [a real weird place] WITH LARRY LAST NIGHT and it was fun.
Catlin is at the Plains Motel asking the bartender Questions. Like "Did you ever wonder why this place changes owners so often?" it is not the bartender's place to wonder. Catlin's face sounds funny. The bartender doesn't have aught to say. Catlin showed him the picture of Willa.
Brittany wants Joyce to call an apartment agent for her. She wants to get on with her life. Joyce called for her.
Clarice gave the babysitter instructions over the phone. Sally is abstracted. She told Clarice they'd had an argument and Kevin was worried and she'd felt kind of alone. Clarice put her foot in it and said "Is it true then? I didn't want to believe it at first" and prattled on about Catlin moving in with Brittany. "Who told you THAT?" said Sally.
Tom's being taken to the hospital. Carter's wild. She's unconscious.
The bartender denied knowing Willa. Catlin shoved money at him and left. Some guy asked the bartender what Catlin had wanted. The bartender told him about Willa and asked if he knew Catlin. The guy said he'd never seen him before.
Clarice said she'd seen Brittany today and she'd showed her the ad in the paper and said Catlin was moving in with her. Sally said it wasn't true. And Catlin couldn't bring himself to tell Brittany so but they all had to be honest and Brittany couldn't control their lives and right now Catlin had two wives and something had to give.
If Catlin and Sally ever had a room in the Hotel Clarendon in Quebec City they would have no choice but to sleep on furniture. There is NO SPACE large enough on the floor for one person [particularly of Catlin's dimensions] let alone two, even wrapped in extremely close embrace.
For men may come and men may go, but I go on forever.
The world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.
