June 9, 2022 - Cave Lake

Everyone mustered at my house on a drizzly early morning as Qudoos drove over in his huge SUV which would transport all six of us up to Killarney park. My neighbour commented that the car must have been magic, as she watched six huge packs and six people of various sizes disappear inside of this vehicle before it drove off. Nevertheless it was a fairly comfortable transport for the seven hour drive to George Lake. It poured rain for most of the way, but just as we arrived at the park, the skies cleared to welcome us. After a quick checkin with the park office to get our permit, we were on our way mid-afternoon.

The gang, starting out

Our first day was a short hike of about 7 km of a fairly easy meandering forest walk taking us past a few nice lookouts over small lakes, where distant quartzite hills provided the backdrop for the many photo stops. Simon struggled a little bit here, as his heavy pack adorned with many pieces of gear would make a tinker proud. A bear barrel of food hung off the bottom, swinging around and hitting him in the ass enough times that he finally took it off and hand carried it the last couple of kilometers to camp.

We arrived at camp just in time for a swim followed by supper. After eating, some growls of thunder has us scampering to get the food up a tree. Simon had the advantage here as he just had to toss his barrel in the bush. Paul W, Mel, and I hauled up three heavy bags of food on a single line and just as we were about to tie it off, the stout branch supporting this decided to release itself from the tree. A hastily rigged second throw ended up with a bad tangle of rope around a branch to sort out, but in the end we were successful in getting the food up and we dove into our tents just as the storm hit with a soaking.

Lady slippers were in full bloom everywhere
