Salisbury Y.H.

Continuing from where I left you on Wednesday, I arrived in St. Erth instead of St. Ives because I would have had to transfer trains there anyway & St. Erth is closer by about 5 miles to the youth hostel. I arrived at the hostel at about 7:30 & had a long conversation with two Australian girls while making and eating supper. In the morning, I went down to the beach on St. Ives Bay & the tide was out so there was lots of sand. I took off my shoes & paddled a bit but it was cold and rather windy so I didn't stay too long. It's a good thing I didn't! The tide came in rather quickly & I was on a sand bar so I had to paddle again to get back to shore. Then I cycled back through St. Erth to Marazion on the other side of the peninsula. I saw St. Michaels's Mount but the causeway was covered by that time, so I didn't go across.

Keeping on the main road along the south coast, I detoured to Porthleven for lunch. After a dessert of beatutiful Cornish "Pasties" (apple turnovers) I went up to Helston & followed the coast through Gweek, Constantine, Porthnavas, Mawnansmith and up to Falmouth. Falmouth consists of palm trees & signs saying "Bed & Breakfast". I was thinking of catching a train that evening to Weymouth, but there isn't a proper station in Falmouth, only a platform & a travel agent downtown who sells tickets. The travel agent was closed, of course.
