Gilley Pond to Triangle Pond

September 6, 2017

It started raining as we got up in the morning so we had coffee under the fly. Packed up our soaking wet gear and hit the dirt. It was very windy, foggy, and rainy, which swiched constantly between a light drizzle and a downpour, making for interesting travel. The only constant being was that the weather was constantly bad. At least the bugs were now non-existent compared to yesterday. The fog made this probably one of the most difficult navigational challenges I have ever encountered. We resourted to counting ponds, ridges, and summits as we travelled and somehow managed to keep roughly on our intended track. Thick tuckamore stymied us a few times, but we always managed to find a way around, or sometimes just had to make like a moose and push through. After about six hours of travel, we reached a long section of tundra, which was a pleasure to walk across, but the gusts of wind and battering rain threatened to knock us off of our feet a few times. As we crossed, the fog cleared for a brief moment and we got a glimpse of Triangle pond in the valley below. A few seconds later the fog closed in again, but with renewed spirits we pushed on through a few more bands of tuckamore and finally reached a boulder field which brought us to the waters edge. Next followed a somewhat interesting rock scramble along the shore with a bit of pushing through some additional dense tuckamore to reach the campsite. It was only 800 meters away, but this section took us well over an hour with lots of German curses thrown in for good measure. Finally we arrived and met a group of three who were holed up in their tent playing cards out of the weather. They were a day behind schedule after getting a bit lost during their travels. We set up on a second, somewhat broken tent platform a little further away and quickly cooked supper in the howling wind and battering rain while remaining in our wet clothes. I wandered over to the other tent and chatted with these folk who were keen to have some assistance in navigation, so I invited them to join us tomorrow. We dove into our tent early to get dried off and warmed up, as quite a chill was beiginning to settle in. This weather was much worse than the 60% chance of showers that were predicted in the forecast from yesterday. Hopefully tomorrow fairs a little brighter.

What today mostly looked like.

Lots of pretty ponds to walk by though.

I spent a lot of time in this pose today.
