Vancouver to Ottawa - 1999

I have always dreamed of riding a bicycle across Canada, ever since I bought my first real bike (which I rode until the frame rusted out in 2001) when I was fourteen years old. In 1996 I saw a way of making my dream become a reality. I planned out the next few years of my life so that I would have four months of free time over the summer. I met a woman named Wendy in those years of waiting, got her interested in cycling, and managed to convince her that it would be a fun adventure. Although we did not ride the entire country, we did a good portion of it. There were good points and bad points about the trip, but overall we had a blast.

The tour lasted almost three months so I have broken up the report into five sections, one for each province we travelled through. We took many photographs (20 rolls!) so I have included some of the interesting ones in the reports. To speed download time, the photos are hyperlinked to the text. Travelling across the country at a human pace lets you see much more than you would from a powered vehicle. There are many things to be experienced while travelling in the great outdoors. One of the things that are missed (actually caused by) when travelling by motor vehicle, are the numerous road kill specialties which grace the pavement and shoulders with their splatter patterns and the resulting aromas which are excreted. For this reason, we kept track... and present the road kill count!
