Tuesday, September 20, 2011 - Lawerencetown - 94 km

It was cold last night, and a very chilly morning followed. Was wearing all my layers while cooking breakfast in the pre-dawn light. Packed up and hit the road, into a head wind which would hinder our progress all day. We stopped in Wolfville to stock up on groceries and Katja bought a knee brace as her right knee was acting up yesterday. While she was doing that, I relaxed in a nice coffee shop and read my book. We continued on down Hwy 1 which had a ridiculous amount of traffic. We passed through several Walmart towns and got really sick of the traffic. Finally we reached Kentville where a sign proclaimed it as the #1 Nova Scotia town. I guess it is the best place to eat at McDicks and visit a Zellars or Walmart. Personally I preferred Wolfville or any ot the countless towns we had passed through so far. Anwyay here we were able to leave the chain business disaster and head north onto country roads. Traffic disappeared and now the riding was quite pleasant. We took a break at a lake park in Lakeville, and then continued on into warm sunshine through orchards and vinyards, potato and corn fields. We had lunch at an orchard where we bought some peaches, plums, and delicious chocolate cookies. After this, progress slowed significantly. Katahrina's knee was bothering her and she was also experiencing some cramps. At Kingston we turned back to the 1 and the traffic so we could find a pharmacy. Some pills took care of the cramping problem. We then switched to the 201, and after passing a big box store complex and getting several km away, the traffic died down. We slowly moved as the wind was strong and the terrain very hilly. At Lawerencetown Katja declared that she was finished for the day. I wanted to make it at least to Bridgetown, but we turned back to the 1 and immediately found a Bed and Breakfast where we decided to spend the night. We are the only guests, so have pretty much the run of the house. We convinced the owners to serve breakfast earlier than usual as we have about 80 km to ride tomorrow before 16:00 as that is when the Ferry departs from Digby.

A strange, but cool sculpture along the road on our way out of Grand Pre.
