August 7, 2026
I got up very early and spent a glorious hour by myself with coffee and book. Deb then joined me for a second cup of
coffee and a bowl of granola. As we packed up camp some growling black clouds began to manifest on the horizon. As
we struck out, the growls started turning into booms, and the sky was lit with the flash of lightning. Fortunately
the way ahead was clear and the river was swift, so we paddled hard, hoping we could outrun this nasty weather.
Outrunning the storm

The storm followed on our heels for an hour or so, and then disappeared as the weather cleared into a nice day. We
stopped for a break at Mason's Landing and explored this historical site. I suggested that we could consider ending
our day here, but nobody was game for this. The site had a nice beach, however it was otherwise not all that appealing
with numerous derelict buildings and a bunch of food scraps littering the ground from a previous party. We pushed
on.

Exploring the derelict cabins

At Eureka landing we stopped for lunch. Another bunch of rotting cabins were found here, but
it had an adjacent campsite that
was very nice, and I managed to convince everyone to stay. The fire pit area was litered with a bunch of junk including
a sleeping bag, a plastic sled, and a rusty barrel full of beer cans and the guts of a broken tape measure. Katharina
loaded up everything into the sled and dragged it off to one of the cabins, which made the fire pit a much nicer
area to hang out at.

Spent the afternoon relaxing, napping, and then finally getting a bit stir crazy I suggested going for a hike to a local
mountain across the creek. Deb and Marc signed up, so we set out trying to find a way. We explored down a well
established trail searching for a way to cross the creek to no avail. We returned to camp and then tried to cross over
a bunch of logs which formed what looked to be a bridge. The bridge started sinking though as I poked my way across,
so I ended up turning back before tumbling in the drink. We explored a few more animal trails
on our side of the creek, and finally found a well trodden track that went steeply up a local hill for about 100 meters
of climbing. We did get a good view up on top, so we declared this the conclusion of our hike, before desending back
to supper at camp.
