July 5, 2015 - Manitou Lake to Kioshkokwi Lake - 3 portages totalling 1930 m
I slept in and Katharina got up early, so for a change I had company for my morning coffee. We also got onto the water
very early for one of the most beautiful mornings of paddling. Mirror calm lakes, clear skies, and, yes! summer
temperatures awaited us today. Katharina navigated us skillfully down the full length of Manitou Lake. This took
almost two hours and we both jumped out of the boat and ran into the bushes to remove the morning coffee from our
systems upon arrival at the first portage. With the exception of one group eating breakfast on the shore, we saw
absolutely no people today until back on Kiosk Lake. The portages went quickly, as the trails along the Amable du Fond
are well maintained, and the food bag is pretty light since we are pretty much out of food. We stopped for a lunch
break on some rocks in the middle of a rapid along the river,
and then later on a small island on Kioshkokwi Lake for a swim break
to escape the heat of the day. The water was ice cold however, so we did not swim for long. Arrived back at the access
point early in the afternoon, after which we drove to Mattawa for a second lunch in the cafe prior to the rest of the
drive home.
Mirror calm day.
