July 3, 2015 - Shad Lake to Sisco Lake - 5 portages totalling 4510 m
I woke up at 05:00 to a seething mass of mosquitos in front of my face. Fortunately the tent netting separated my
lucious cheeks from their probing jaws. I rolled over and decided to wait for the sun to come up. An hour later I was
up and making coffee. The bugs were annoying but manageable with enough clothing between myself and them. I read my
book down by the water until Katja got up, after which we cooked up a pancake breakfast by the shore. By 09:00 we were
packed and paddling off on a brilliant sunny day. At Fassett Lake we spent some time watching a moose who spent some
time watching us. After a while, we decided to break the staring contest and paddled on to the portage. The portages
were very buggy. The paddling was a relief from the blood thirsty critters. We stopped for a quick lunch at a campsite
along Kakasamic Lake and then two more carries brought us to Sisco Lake. We checked out a couple sites before selecting
the nicer one and settled in. We went for a brief swim in the freezing could water... how can such a shallow lake be
so cold in July?
On the carry again.
