May 17, 2007 - Rest Day on Burntroot Lake - 7km paddle, 2km hike

Woke up in the morning to discover the west side of the lake basking in sunshine! Pulled the food bag down and spread the contents out on the bottom of the overturned canoe to dry. Winthin minutes a few curious squirrels were investigating, so I moved everything closer to where I was sitting so I could keep watch. Rob got up and we cooked up a pancake breakfast. We then spent the next couple of hours lazing around and hanging various wet pieces of gear and clothing in the sun to dry. We then packed a couple snacks and some water and paddled off across the lake to visit the ruins of an old farm. On the way we passed an island that was full of herons sitting in the tree tops. I have never seen a heron in a tree before, yet saw at least four today. We explored the farmsite, which was mainly ruins of log buildings, bits of rusted metal, and lots of squashed buckets. We found a marked trail leading away from the site, so followed it for about a kilometer, skirting around many fallen trees, and finally to a section which had been flooded by a beaver where we decided to turn around. We paddled back to camp and cooked a meal of macaroni and cheese with dehydrated vegetables. Not very tasty, but full of nutritional value for sure. I went for a very quick swim in the afternoon. Very quick because the water was freezing. Spent the rest of the day reading and relaxing. Supper was dehydrated chilli. Also not very tasty, but it filled the belly.
