Born in 1943 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, I attended King's College School (Wimbledon, London, England) and graduated with honours B.Sc. in Chemistry from Carleton University, Ottawa. I still live in Ottawa and have travelled widely.
Regarding my involvement as a citizen, I first walked into my local city hall in the mid-1980s to try and protect natural areas. For a while I was active in such groups as Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Ecovision (long gone) and Federation of Citizens' Associations (representing the community association where I live).
Regarding paid employment, I worked until retirement in what is sometimes called the cultural industry of film-making. Starting out as a freelance sound recordist, then as a film cameraperson, I clocked over 10 years, mostly in television news and public affairs. Then for 25 years, I worked as a lighting technician, generally in drama. I have also tried my hand at script-writing without much direct success.
