My Day Job
I am a freelance photographer and audio engineer. My resumé.
Current Projects
- Large-format Photography
- Setting up my 4x5 enlarger. Doing the occasional shoot with my Technikardan. Trying to
catch up on processing.
- Digital Photography
- Fine Art Monochrome inkjet printing.
- Audio Recording
- I'm doing location recording of choirs, chamber ensembles, etc. Optimising my
lightweight location rig.
- Live Sound
- I do the PA work for various ensembles. This is a good excuse to buy equipment.
- Home computer network
- Just keeping everything running! Planning a silent PC for audio editing.
Personal Interests
- Photography
- Photography has been my big hobby since high school. Since then it has evolved into a
part-time business and a potential second career. I am an active portrait shooter and past
president of the Camera Club of Ottawa. I operate my own darkroom and also print
digitally. I shoot Olympus E-3, Nikon, Bronica and 4x5. I collect Japanese rangefinders with fast lenses
and Yashica Twin-Lens Reflex cameras. I do (or have done) hand colouring, copying and
restoration, weddings, and macro.
-
- Audio Electronics
- I can never have enough stereo gear, LPs, CDs, tapes, etc. Now I do digital recording of
small groups and choirs, and set up and operate sound reinforcement systems.
-
- Electro-optics
- Classical optics, image intensification, thermal imaging, lasers, photometry,
spectroradiometry and colour science. For six years I worked in the electro-optics lab at
QETE and really enjoyed the time on this subject.
-
- Information Technology
- From the Fortran school of programming to building PCs... I've done machine and assembly
language progamming on the Motorola 6800 family, and low-level hardware interfacing. I
learned C++ at Algonquin College, thinking I might get into IT as a career but it didn't
happen. For eight years I did the job of Information System Security Officer for my
division. Now I just do whatever is needed to keep all my PCs running. Building a linux
box is on my list of things to do.
- Woodworking
- Whenever I have time and the shop is not too cold. Small furniture projects and home
renovations are about all I get around to doing.
