I'm active in home stereo, sound reinforcement, and audio recording
My Home Equipment. My Pro Audio Equipment.
What I do:
I'm not doing much live sound any more on my own; it's mainly at the theatre. I worked with a vocal trio with piano and guitar accompaniment. I also amplify soloists performing with a choir, usually in churches or
medium size halls. If there
is no acoustic piano I set up my Kawai MP9000 with a Fender KXR100. Recent gigs include
African Sanctus and the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum Power Show.
The recording is a mix of live choral works in churches and smaller home concerts. I don't have a studio so I do location work. Most often I use a Shure VP88 to record the mid and side separately and do the XY conversion afterward. I have done it on a mixer using a splitter cable and three mixer channels as explained by Mike Sokol. Now I usually do it in Audacity. Works a treat. For choirs sometimes I do ORTF using the pair of AT 3528 pencil cardioids or the Elations. And sometimes I choose X-Y.
Recording done so far.
Harry Holbrook playing saxophone along with music minus one CDs (15 tracks).
Jazz quartet Voxquad (14 tracks)
Chorum vocal ensemble (live concerts)
Feedback in my basement (some multitrack and some direct to stereo).
My wife Anne and her accompanist Wita Schliewen.
Harmonia Choir of Eastern Ottawa (two live concerts)
Piano and Cello (David Eggert most recently)
Soprano with guitar (Bonnie Cooper and Chris Milne)
Will Ackerman and David Cullen
Carla Sved
Cumberland Community Singers
Baking my reel-to-reel tapes.
I do half a dozen at a time then rewind them and play them through to make sure they are
still good. I am using a normal oven, heated by a 100 W light bulb with the oven door
cracked open. I also have a little computer fan to keep the air moving around, though I
did some tapes without it and they turned out OK as well. My tapes are mostly Sony
SLH-7-550-BL and Maxell UDXL-35-90B. Others include Scotch Classic and Sony PR-150.
