Kanata's Achievements

Together with Merle's strong leadership, Kanata has:

  • been named one of the top 5 cities in Canada by The Globe & Mail;
  • over 20,000 jobs in our community - half in the high tech industry;
  • grown in commercial, retail & office space - increasing services & giving us a healthy tax base;

    Fiscal Responsibility

    Merle's strong sense of fiscal responsibility means Kanata has:
  • commited to 'pay-as-you-go' policies so we live within our means;
  • over $12 million in reserves for our future and moved to a fast track to eliminate city debt;
  • reduced average household payments to the city by 3%;
  • flattened city expenditures in spite of growth.

    Kanata First

    In Kanata, we enjoy a unique quality of life. We are proud of our community, its values, our parks and our open spaces. Merle Nicholds has shown us that she is proud too.

    From initiatives such as creating safer streets to supporting the work of community groups, Mayor Nicholds has been unfailing in her commitment to help build a city for everyone - young & old.

    From the annual opening of Pinhey's Point to the Holiday Lighting Celebrations to celebrating Canada Day, Merle has helped us build our own civic traditions and community-wide events.

    Today, we have more cultural facilities, more community spirit and more involvement of our youth in city activities than ever before.

    What's ahead for Kanata

    As never before, Kanata is facing certain change. Municipal restructuring is threatening our very existence and values. We are also experiencing increased pressures to shape the unprecedented rapid growth within our city.

    Municipal Restructuring

    Despite pressures from Queen's Park, the residents of Kanata have a clear vision: This is our city. We want a say in whatever changes the future brings!

    Mayor Nicholds has already shown her determination to fight for Kanata by chairing a forum of Mayors. Her experience helped to produce a unanimous consensus, halting the plans of the provincial government. Merle Nicholds will continue to give us the strong and decisive leadership we need to build a future that focuses on:

  • our sense of neighbourhood
  • our involvement in civic decisions
  • our strong, local economy.

    Unprecedented Rapid Growth

    At 50,000 strong today, Kanata is at a crossroads in its development. We are now on the edge, poised for growth. The path we choose to manage that growth depends on the Mayor we elect.

    Merle Nicholds believes in Kanata and shares our vision and concerns:

  • creation of our town centre
  • high quality community development
  • strategic plan for ammenities/services
  • minimized taxes
  • a strong, proud city.

    Facing Our Future

    Merle Nicholds has proven her ability to lead Kanata into an exciting future. Merle will help us to manage the rapid growth our city will see in the next few years. Because her commitment to Kanata moves hand-in-hand with our own values, we can be certain that Mayor Nicholds will be:
