Rick Mercer gets minimum signatures for referendum to have Stockwell Day change name to Doris!


Rick Mercer has proven that a requirement of 3% of the electorate to initiate a referendum vote is ridiculously easy. All he did was put his petition on the Web!

On November 13, 2000 night's This Hour Has 22 Minutes TV program, the comedian asked Canadians to call for a federal referenum on the program's Web site www.22minutes.com asking the people of Canada if they would require Alliance party leader Stockwell Day to change his first name to "Doris", making his name "Doris Day". Even Rick was astonished at the response - by Thursday night, nearly half a million people had voted on the Web site and by Friday afternoon the online petition form had been completed by 616,000 people -- and growing.
