Saturday, July 5, 2014 - Cornwall - 30 km

Awoke at 05:00 and noticed that hurricane Arthur was not really here yet, but felt too lazy to get up, so read my book for a bit and then fell asleep again. We had a good breakfast and finally got on the road for 09:30 to light drizzle and a fairly stiff east wind. We crawled out of town for 2 km, at which point Katja decided to go back so I could continue at my own pace and fetch the car. It was windy, but manageable and most of the time I could keep moving at 13-15 km/h despite the gusting winds. I said hello to a few joggers as I battled onward, finally getting a bit of a crosswind as I turned northwards towards Cornwall. Crossing the river was a little bit scary as the cross wind gusts made riding a straight line very difficult, and on the final descent down the driveway to the BnB, the wind was so strong I had to shift down to my lowest gear and push the pedals with all my power to achieve 6 km/h riding downhill! The drive back was also somewhat scary due to the wind gusts, but we had a fantastic lunch in Victoria before driving on to Greenwich National Park and going for a hike along the beach, getting somewhat sand blasted by the wind. Had supper in an enclosed picnic area before driving back to the BnB for the night.

Starting out on our first day of bad weather.

Looking back at Victoria from across the bay.

I would not like to be canoeing today.

Today's scarecrow... blowing in the wind.

Greenwich sand dune beach.

Dead avian embedded in the sand.

Partially re-assembled lobster found along the beach.
