Thursday, July 3, 2014 - Richmond - 79 km

I slept like a rock until waking at 05:00 and read my book for an hour before getting up and putting on coffee. Packed up and rode out into a sunny day, but with some clouds forming for the first time this trip. We followed the scenic route which was quite pretty and had no traffic. We also had a tailwind so made great time all the way to Coleman where we got on the Confederation trail to ride for the next 10 km. We had ridden this section before a few days prior, but new fresh gravel had been laid since, so it was somewhat soft and difficult in parts. At Portage we got back on the road and followed along the coast now turned into the wind. Stopped for lunch at a small diner in Elerslie and relaxed for a while on the picnic tables outside. The wind began to pick up and some dark clouds to the south were threatening, but they never amounted to anything and before long we were battling a nasty headwind in the scorching afternoon sun again. We tried to find a place to camp at large along here, but to no avail. There are just too many farm houses. We spied a dirt track with no power poles heading towards the sea and followed it, hoping to find some beachfront real estate, but alas, another road joined and a cluster of houses dotted the waterfront. We biked back to the main road and took a break in the shade of some maples beside a cemetary. The wind got worse. As we sat and rested, gusts of wind threatenned to carry off unsecured pieces of our lunch. Finally we started again and made our way slowly to the town of Richmond, where we stopped in a coffee shop for a drink, snack, and refill on the water bottles. We chatted a while with the friendly attendant who warned us of a hurricane approaching on Saturday. We took to the trail at this point and stopped at the first rest area with a picnic table, sandwiched between a cow pasture, and a marshy forest. There is room to pitch the tent, so it looks like here is our destination tonight.

Another brilliant day... I am sensing a theme here!

A man made trout fishing pond.

Fish ladder up the dam.

Dueling churches in a town with a population of about ten (including the dog).

A shady spot for lunch out of the heat, but not the wind.

Camping along the trail, between cows and a marshy place.
