So I made a few customizations and the big one to take away is this idea that
a junk usb stick can be put in the port on boot with a certain 20 char string
and the overlay would be reset in the event the system got messed up. Also I
set all usb devices to 'on' control as opposed to low power idle. These are
my changes:

--->(/etc/rc.local)
# Put your custom commands here that should be executed once
# the system init finished. By default this file does nothing.

echo "150000" >/proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_max
echo "150000" >/proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_tcp_timeout_established
echo "300" >/proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_udp_timeout
echo "600" >/proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_udp_timeout_stream
echo "300" >/proc/sys/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_generic_timeout

uci set wireless.@wifi-iface[0].powersave='0'
uci set wireless.@wifi-iface[1].powersave='0'

/mnt/usbonloop.sh &

dd if=/dev/sda of=/tmp/sdakey.txt bs=1 count=21
cmp --silent /tmp/sdakey.txt /mnt/comparekey.txt && /sbin/firstboot -y -r

exit 0
--->(/mnt/usbonloop.sh) also chmod +x this file
#!/bin/bash

while true
do
  for path in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/control; do
    echo on | tee "$path" >/dev/null 2>&1
  done
  sleep 3
done

--->(/mnt/comparekey.txt)
SUFFIDYRESETDPC3848V
(end of changes)

BTW I make directories like /mnt/hd1 /mnt/hd2 /mnt/ifuse to mount things on.
Also I just dd comparekey.txt to the junk /dev/sda stick. The dd count in
/etc/rc.local has to be the real length of your comparekey.txt.
