June 20: Birding South of Town

We got up and had breakfast, including Pamela’s delicious coffee, with 4 cats wandering around. Craig and Pamela have 3 cats, and their house guest, Allie, had another.

Craig planned a day south of town, so we loaded up. Pamela showed us a Downy Woodpecker in a tree next door, with babies ready to fledge.

We drove south to Dundern seeing many birds on fence posts, including the emblematic Western Meadowlarks. Other highlights were Baltimore Orioles, Loggerhead Shrikes, Northern Shovelers, Wilson’s Phalaropes, American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, four kinds of grebes, and many waterfowl. We had lunch at Big Mur’s Tavern and looped back to town checking out reservoirs and ponds along the way.
