2023 OFO Peterborough Convention : September 21-24, 2023

Day 1: Ottawa to Peterborough

We had arranged to meet our Toronto birding buddies, Colin and Hilda Wooles at Peterborough and to participate in the same program events with them.
We left Ottawa shortly after 8 am on Thursday September 21, and took Highway 7. We saw the Great Egret as we passed the Carleton Place stormwater pond, but decided not to stop for it.

After Perth, we took a slight detour along Old Brooke Road where sighting had been reported. Indeed, we did see three Northern Flickers before rejoining Highway 7.

Just before the Tweed turnoff, we took a short break to stretch and use the washrooms. Cedar Waxwings were in the nearby trees.

From there, we continued straight to the Super 8 in Peterborough, following Google’s directions. We were 4 minutes late for our 12-noon rendezvous with Colin and Hilda, and Colin phoned as we turned onto Lansdowne Street. We parked and found them in the lobby of our hotel.

We decided to go birding in town at the Trent Canal where Dave Milsom had taken us in 2020. We stopped on the way there for a picnic by the river where we spotted some picnic tables.
Bill almost got us to the right spot, but on the other side of the canal; close enough.

Unfortunately, there were few birds out in the afternoon heat, but a cooperative Osprey saved the day.

We enjoyed our evening meal together at a nearby Wendy’s.
