Biography

Bernie is a singer songwriter living in Strathroy Ontario where he is a notable figure in the arts community. He has been singing, accompanying himself on guitar and banjo and playing in bands for over 30 years. Bernie writes and performs songs that come from a deep personal commitment to people and to his environment. His first solo album “another path” is witness to Bernie’s joy of telling a story through song and his thrill in collaborating with other musicians.

History

Bernie’s musical career began in Ottawa Ontario, with singing and performing in bands dedicated to folk/bluegrass and Celtic music styles. His Celtic influences come from a hearty dose of Irish immigrant music from the Ottawa Valley, and a sprinkling of East Coast music while attending University in Nova Scotia. Bernie has played and sung on three albums: “Bless the Child”, a contemporary gospel recording, “Walk With Me”, songs for married love and “For the Wonder of Me”, an album written for the L’Arche Society of Canada.

A strong influence for Bernie’s writing and performing comes from his commitment to humanitarian work in rural Africa for which he received the 2001 Lewis Perinbam Award for International Development.

While playing in Deep River, a four person folk group dedicated to performing original songs, Bernie developed a passion for composing music. Currently Bernie performs in a wide range of venues with violinist/fiddler Mary Ashton, continues to write new songs and entertains audiences of all ages.
