Kings Lynn,
Norfolk
Dear Mum & Liz,
I mailed the first letter & film this morning but decided to write a bit each night while it's fresh in my memory. It was another beautiful sunny day but it got a bit hot and hazy in the afternoon. Just before I left Norwich this morning, I phoned the hostel here & found they were closed for this part of May. I decided to ride to Kings Lynn anyway since it is the largest & I think oldest town in the vicinity and I felt sure I could find a place to stay. I went through East Dereham & stopped for lunch at a little place called Beeston where there was the inevitable pub. After lunch I went on to Castle Acre where my "Open to View" [a one-price pass that let me into a large number of historic sites] let me in to see the castle & priory. All in ruins similar to the abbey in Leiston.
When I arrived here I had quite a bit of trouble finding a place to stay but eventually got into a small bed & breakfast place almost in the centre of town. Fortunately, these places only charge 2 pounds so I'm not really overspending. I did splurge on a steak supper tonight, though, since I was getting rather weary of fried eggs, bacon, English sausages & chips, which the English seem to eat continually.
