There is a lot of information available about Rockets and space travel from NASA. We contacted their Web site and got the attached information.
To summarize, rockets were made by the Chinese hundreds of years ago. These rockets were more like fireworks though and were not powerful enough to get into space. It wasn't until 1926 that a liquid fueled rocket was made. The inventor was Dr. Robert H. Goddard. For that reason, he is considered to be the inventor of the modern rocket.

Perhaps the school's science committee will launch some small rockets when the weather gets warmer. We have both solid fuel rockets that have to be bought at a hobby store and water rockets that you could build.
