If you toss a ball into the air gently it goes up only a little bit before it falls to the ground. If you throw it harder (faster), it will go higher.

So, you can imagine that if you got the ball going fast enough it go high enough to get out of the Earth's atmosphere.

You need a pretty powerful motor to make something go that fast. A rocket engine is very powerful and it can make a rocket go fast enough to leave the atmosphere.

A big rocket can go right into orbit around the Earth and possibly never fall back to the ground. An even bigger rocket can leave the Earth altogether and go out into space. Some rockets have gone the the Moon, Mars, Jupiter and even further. Right now there is a spaceship going around the planet Jupiter. It will stay there for about two years and take pictures and do experiments to find out more about Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system.
