Back to  How can you tell if a goldfish is a boy or a girl?

Hmmmm, now why would anyone care if a fish is male or female? Oh well, we got our biology expert, Marisa R. to give us this answer.

As in all vertebrates (i.e., animals with skeletons) the reproductive organs of a fish are testes in males and ovaries in females. The testes produce males sex cells or sperm and the ovaries produce female cells or eggs.

These organs are located inside the body of the fish and most fish release their sex cells into the water through an opening near the anus.

External organs are not present in most fish (including a goldfish) so, to know the sex of the fish you would have to dissect, or cut open, the fish.
