Back to  How does the steering wheel on the car make the wheels turn?

Not too many people know exactly how the steering in a car works. We did, however, get Gord O., alias the professor to give us this answer.

This question is a toughie. It is not as simple as it looks. First you have to know a little bit about gears. There is a great explanation and diagrams on page 582 of volume 7 of The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Inventions in your school library. Then you can look up Steering Gear on page 1495 of volume 17.

If you then want to find out how power steering works, look it up on page 1071 of volume 12 of the same encyclopedia.

If you browse through that encyclopedia you will probably find all kinds of things that interest you.
